Earlier today, the NCAA announced that their enforcement staff and UCLA have come to an agreement regarding an investigation into possible recruiting violations within the Bruins' women's cross country and track and field pro...
The NCAA stated that, "The agreed-upon violations occurred over several months and include impermissible communications, primarily with parents of student-athletes at other schools who were not in the NCAA Transfer Portal."
Penalties will include one year of probation, a $5000 fine and unspecified recruiting restrictions. The NCAA also noted that, "team records will be vacated from all regular-season and postseason competitions in which the involved athletes were ineligible."
Last year, allegations of impermissible contact with athletes were lodged at Brosnan after the former UCLA distance coach had landed multiple top-level distance talents in quick succession. Brosnan has repeatedly and vehemently denied the claims.
The Stride Report reached out to a UCLA representative for comment and received the following statement, "I was informed of the resolution of this prior matter but have no further comment."

This really isn’t that big of a deal… schools get recruiting shutdowns occasionally for minor infractions. I have been on two staffs that have had a shutdown for a week. One because an athlete was called who had already signed an NLI, coach called them, realized they signed, and reported himself. Another because an athlete was called before the first allowable date. Both times we were given the ability to decide when to serve the punishment, and we chose the week of Christmas and didn’t recruit that week. What’s weird is it seems like their compliance office is making them make it public… which is pretty dumb. No reason to make the program look bad by presenting it publicly.

The violations you listed would not have a shutdown as a penalty. It's clear you are making things up.
They have to announce it, if they just went silent without warning recruits would think UCLA was no longer interested.

It does happen from time to time for an individual coach to serve a short ban, but for an entire women's cross country and track & field staff to be shut down for 14 days, is significant. I can't think of specific times this has happened in our sport recently, what are other examples? This also overlaps with the first 14 days of the cross country transfer portal window. I can't imagine UCLA's cross country staff is happy with this timeframe. They will have no access to undergraduate women looking for a new home, many of those women will be signed by the time this ban expires.

I’ve been told sports betting is bigger than most think. I had no idea you can’t participate as a coach or athlete. It’s makes sense as a coach but silly if you’re an athlete of an Olympic sport.

I don’t think they need to worry about top athletes being interested in UCLA for cross country. They have been a complete train wreck and would be lucky getting a 4:59 girl.

This recruiting ban has nothing to do with sports betting. Sports betting does not carry any recruiting penalties because it isn't recruiting related. There is no NCAA legislation ANYWHERE that lists recruiting bans as a penalty for sports betting.
The fact that it's a ban only for WOMEN'S cross country and track further discredits your argument. Why would the NCAA only punish the women's team for something the MEN'S AND WOMEN'S head coach did?
This ban is because of the violations that UCLA admitted Brosnan committed. PERIOD.

You got caught with your hand in the cookie jar. You didn’t understand not to go after the Czar of track and field.
Go lick your wounds and go back to coaching at a high school or an NAIA school. The pro jobs you post and talk about aren’t happening, unless you get the assistant gig in flagstaff. The NCAA won’t touch you for a few years.

You have to be found guilty to serve a penalty for a violation in the NCAA. And according to the NCAA Brosnan does not have a single violation. Remember this was also two years ago. UCLA has since then most likely committed something. You can’t serve penalty for something you want someone to be committed on. If this was a violation from Brosnan the NCAA makes it public. This is clear it’s something else for UCLA.

This is the same tag line for every thread about a coach or athlete. Maybe Brosnan coached a better athlete than you, maybe you are just unhappy. But I’ve coached at a small school in the NCAA and now teach high school and know how the NCAA works. You seem confused. You seem to want to bring this man down and what has he done to you ? I just know what I see and I see nothing saying he broke any rules. You don’t have to like it but all I know is the people to talk bad about others on here always use the same tag line for everyone
