I don't agree with you. Your ideas on what is healthy capitalism are incorrect.
You want to pay more for the same thing to save jobs that can be done better and cheaper elsewhere. Do you also win races by telling stronger competition to go away?
Half the country, or at least half the people who engage in politics beyond voting, have convinced themselves and/or been conditioned to believe everything Trump is saying in the moment, and to ignore that he may have said the opposite two days ago. A lot of the other half is likewise conditioned to just scream that he’s racist or sexist rather than pointing out the actual flaws in his arguments and alleged opinions. In some ways that’s an intentional thing beneficial to the elite: keep the people in a spiral of emotional arguments rather than letting them get smart enough to debate issues on their merits, and a screaming psycho idiot like Trump is perfect for keeping that grift going.
So that’s why no one is talking about the merits or non-merits of tariffs, because the elite have ensured nobody wants to do that.
Why don't we call out the neoliberals who lied about how free trade would be great for American workers and American manufacturing and how adding China to the WTO make them becoming a liberal democracy so we wouldn't need to worry about de-industrializing the Midwest and becoming reliant on them? That seems more important.
Re "worked well": Virtually every economist agrees they did NOT work well, in that the trade deficit with China skyrocketed, and the national deficit increased dramatically as well.
Regardless, you dodged my main point, which is that Trump lies about the basic premise of who pays for tariffs.
Lots of people call him out, I hear about this all the time. And if he overdoes it and they lead to disaster then I guess we'll learn the hard way. Obviously there's a contingency that will never blame him for anything but we're living in narrowly divided times so if you deliver a disaster then it's likely you'll lose the majority.
Re "lots of people call him out": I have yet to hear a single mainstream network or Democrat politician explicitly call him out for lying. My point is that they'll say tariffs are problematic, but that leaves voters still believing that the other countries are paying the US money.
Re "then we'll learn the hard way": The first time he did it, our trade deficit with China AND the national debt both exploded. We didn't "learn" from that because people still believed China was paying us money.
First off, for anyone that doesn't know, tariffs are NOT a tax that you can charge to other countries. They're a tax on American companies that do business with other countries. I repeat: they are literally a tax on American companies, full stop.
Trump has explicitly said "tariffs are a tax on foreign countries", and "we're going to be taking in trillions of dollars from China by charging them tariffs". imho this is his farthest fetching lie, because he's talking about trillions of dollars, where we'd literally be taking in zero.
The closest I've heard anyone in the Media come to calling him out on this is when they say "Trump's tariffs hurt American consumers". Normally they just say "Trump's tariffs on " which they know will lead viewers to believe him.
This leaves many voters still believing that Trump is able to to charge taxes to China/Mexico/Canada. The fact that no one seems willing to just say "he's lying, that's not how tariffs work at all, we're not taking in ANY money from China", is a problem.
If you want to educate your friends a bit about this, and for American companies to not get taxed for no reason, point them to this Investopedia article explaining the basics of tariffs (see the part where it says "Tariffs are paid by domestic consumers and not the exporting country"), so that SOMEONE can start holding Trump accountable for his unchecked lies:
Nope, just a half stop there. Tariffs are a redistribution of money that would normally go from importing companies to the foreign country by diverting a portion of it instead to other local companies who would see increased revenue.
So it is effectively a tax on foreign companies and by consequence on the foreign country’s taxation income. Weird, stupid orange man seems to understand it better than you.
Don’t expect these folks to start reading Stiglitz; coherence is a big ask. Most of them have been steeping in disinformation until lies have become a security blanket conditioned to hate. Most look forward to the continuing drama and feigned patriotism. Talk about an opioid crisis.

Well, assuming it works like you are indicating (which is debatable) what is actually happening is the consumer is paying more for goods and that money goes to 'other local companies'. So, at best, it's a tax on the consumer or redistribution of wealth within the US. All of this doesn't matter anyway because all trump is doing is playing to the crowd nothing will really happen.

This is how it works in your imagination, but it in no way guarantees local companies will increase revenues. Sourcing goes to the next cheapest competitors, which can be and are often just imported from different countries than the primary exporter. US tariffs do not limit consumers and corporations to buying only from other US corporations.

You're going too soft on him ;) Trump claims tariffs are literally a tax paid by other countries. They are not. He wants people to believe this, and many, many people do. Show some integrity by holding your guy accountable.

Looks like you are not disagreeing with anything I actually said. In the event of redistribution, it definitely is also a tax on the foreign country.

A tariff is a tax imposed by one country on the goods and services imported from another country to influence it, raise revenues, or protect competitive advantages.

I’ve never heard him literally claim that, nor is he expected to be that precise anyway. He’s not “my guy”, nor do I spontaneously despise his very mention. Not everyone comes colored in party lines.
Making a foreign country pay is effectively the same thing as a tax on them; tomato/tomahto.
Trump tariffed the goods we were bringing in from Chinese factories. We raised our prices to sufficiently maintain our margins. Consumer paid the bill. No production was moved.
Everyone knows how tariffs work. The point is to make it harder for American companies to do business with foreign suppliers. This will hurt those foreign economies and lead to more American manufacturing. Also fewer drug dealers and gang bangers.
Winner winner turkey dinner! Remember to be thankful for all the winning on the beautiful Thanksgiving day!

So you too, think that none of this matters anyway because all trump is doing is playing to the crowd? Would have never guessed from what you wrote!
