Brian was really a workhorse in college but did not pocess natural leg speed although his strength allowed him to have a great finishing kick in the longer races. I do not have his stat's in front of me and it has been a few years, but I do believe he ran 4:19 in the indoor mile and 3:59 in the outdoor 1500. He only raced those shorter distances a couple times per year mainly for training purposes. The longer the race--the better for Brian and the marathon is definitely his bread and butter. It is great to see him stay involved with the sport.
Kevin,
Thanks for an obviously very informed perspective. Very impressed with all that Brian is doing. He certainly has earned everything he has achieved.

He hasn't pr'd in any track event since 2002. Wouldn't be surprised to see him break through this year if he enters a 10k.
cool, yeah, I go to LVC, and yes I do suck, but I was curious, haha
i think he has a faster 1/2 than that (62:30ish??), and i'm guessing he won't be on the track too much
let's not pretend that Sell was a big waste in h.s.
he ran against little to no competition, and ran very respectable times and also very quality ones in college.
the kid is legit, but has always been a contender and a racer.
10:06, 3200/2miler in HS...from runnersworld.com on 4-03-06
RW: On the message boards, people seem to admire you as almost a working class or "blue collar" type runner who made good--not a product of a major college program or someone who ran 27-something for 10K at that time. Do you see yourself in that mold?
BS: Sort of, yeah. It would be the greatest thing in the world if I motivated a guy that was a 10:10 guy (for two-miles) out of high school to keep after it and he turned himself into something amazing. I was a 10:06 guy out of high school. It's kind of the American dream, I guess, to work your way up. That's kind of what we're doing here. We don't have any superstars at the Hansons, but we're all working every day, trying to work our way up. I guess the big thing is that it's sort of proof that anybody can do it
Who is the "Ali" of track? Mel, claiming "he is the greatest American distance runner of all time" at that point I stopped liking the guy as a runner. What a A**hole!

his first marathon was actually a 2:21 to get his OT qualifier at Chicago in 2003. He'd run the world half the week before and just ran enough to hit the standard along with Trent Briney and few other Hansons
actually, it was right around 2:20.
The guy is a redneck. That is wrong with "american" distance running. I know he's running will never amount to much. He'll never win a major marathon or the olympics. He's a joke.
2:19:57 and from an interview:
...We (Hansons) had six guys going for the 2:22 standard and we basically stayed together for 18 miles at that 2:22 pace. Nick Cordes and I were training at a little higher level than the other four guys and Kevin and Keith (Hanson) told us that we were allowed to go if we felt inclined. So we both took off at that point and I was clicking off 5:05's per mile from mile 18 to 24 and I hit the wall pretty hard at mile 24. I was reeling in Josh Cox and Dan Browne and then all of a sudden my 25th mile was a 5:30 and my 26th was a 6:00 and it felt all-out.
