personally i think the south has changed, it used to be more laidback, polite, noblesse oblige. to me it's become more cut-throat ruthless and outright political. IMO basically reflecting the northerners who moved down here as political migrants.
like, people would look after each other and take care of the poor, independent of politics. that's become you're either red or blue and discussed in terms of welfare and not just helping out.
nah, it's shifted from being the sort of place where people waved you onto the street and let you in, or even stopped mid-road to let you turn -- with maybe one teenage menace in a muscle car who caused stuff -- into a more systematic ruthlessness, we had a move-in a couple houses down nearly run my wife off the road. and i don't think he knew who precisely it was til he was nearly past her. just libertarian obnoxiousness. i owe you nothing, get out of my way, rules don't apply to me.
you might have some of the old ways saved in amber in the small towns, but also the racial politics. if there's folks of another hue they are other side of the tracks in the next town. the racial aspect of this is what i think trump plays upon. big city folks are used to diversity. it's the people in white flight suburbs or the sticks who are used to living among 95% white folks and freaked out as their towns integrate.
the southern cities the racial stuff is going away but you have the politics instead.
