This tracks for what I’ve been hearing back in Seattle. That it was trash and chaotic disorganization. Will never understand what makes someone think starting a race early in a last minute hasty decision is a good idea. Terrible.
If you read the article, you’d know why they moved up the start time. Marathon and 10k runners were ahead of schedule so they said screw it, let’s start the half early. What idiots. You don’t need to know much about running to know how dumb of an idea that is. But then again not surprising. Every day I’m reminded how stupid the general population is when driving
I don't think I ever was on a start line 7 or 8 minutes before it started.
I think it's absolutely absurd that the race started early, but you've really never been on the start line 7-8 minutes early? At larger events it can be really hard to get around the barriers and people to get to the start if you're not there early.
I agree. Large races start screaming at everyone 15 minutes ahead of time. Watch any marathon or large race on TV and you will see the elites lined up 15 minutes in advance. I didn't see the prize money listed here. How much was it? I guess they could double up if they wanted to eliminate controversy.

The CEO Race Director is a self-promoting exec, clueless about these things. All of his logic and reasoning in the front page article reeks of someone who has never ran a race in his life yet he brags about his 2:56 at New York every chance he gets. Unreal execution. I'm sure race will suffer, as will his/company reputation. Not good at all.
The Portland Marathon has been an embarassment for such a running-focused city for many, many years. It had the same t-shirt design for 30 years, the worst race course in the US, and about 5 years ago the race director was arrested for fraud.
How would it be so difficult to start the half-marathon on time?!
Can you imagine any real runner just starting a race early? It blows my mind that someone who cares that little about running could be making a decision like that.
They apparently decided to move the start time up by 7 or 8 minutes like 7 or 8 minutes before it started. Ok, here are the details. This is wild. The half marathon was supposed to start at 7:15. They for some reason decided to start it at 7:07 at 6:59 am.
What a joke. That caused people to have to jump barriers to get on the course and for some of the half marathon runners to run into the back of marathon runners/

I'd still like to know why they moved up in the first place. What was the advantage that they thought they'd get?
This isn't what happened, you dolt. You didn't even read the article you linked, did you? It says that an eight-minute warning was given, and then the race started about a minute after that. If the race went off at 7:07, then the warning was ostensibly given at 7:06 (don't know why; as that would imply a 7:14 start), and the gun went off one minute later, at 7:07. Where do you get 6:59? Seriously--act like a journalist for a change and pay some attention.
I wonder if that's a world record for most runners passed in a mile.
I believe Yuki Kawauchi has done a number of races where he is the last to start with the intent to pass as many people as possible, so probably not.
(unrelated) It is obvious that no runners were a part of the decision to start the race early.
I created the first complete database of Houston Marathon results several years ago, including split times. The webpage included the ability to see how many people each person passed in 5K segments. It was common to see someone who started at the back and passed most of the field in the first 5K. So yeah, not close to a record.
The half marathon start may not even have been the stupidest thing that morning. I went down to the finish to watch my buddy in the 10k, and the finishing chute had a big gate in front of it, still closed 32 minutes in. I tried to find a race official and see when they were planning on opening it, since I knew he'd been finishing soon, but there were no officials to be found.
Luckily he is a tall guy, so I could see him through the huge crowd of 20-min milers ( the 10k course rejoined the back pack of marathon walkers for the last 3/4 mile)... he was bobbing and weaving through the crowd, finally got to the totally closed off finishing chute, and had to come to a complete stop and jump over the fence. Absolutely laughable.

That's hilariously awful. This event just sounds like an overall sh*t show run by people who know nothing about hosting a good running event.
Here’s a Stumper: Portland is Hyper Local right? Well Brooksee the company that runs the Marathon is Utah based. So much for local! Make it make sense?!
They run the Vegas and Mesa marathons too.
Apparently the Vegas Marathon they're running next month is brand new this year. Ominous sign!
It is frustrating that this city/area has such a big running community, but is not well represented in this event. I don't think they should use this in their advertising: "Founded in 1972, the Portland Marathon is the premier marathon and half marathon on the West Coast."
There were some other issues with the event this year as well, but the screw up with the HM start was the worst. On a positive note, no one got stopped by any trains, which has been an issue in the past.
I think it is funny that people down vote your posts because you are not a man.
happens all the time
Naw, looking at it logically its because tRg's takes are on roughly the level of Greg's. Same for her husband. Sorry, Portland is small beans. Sorry that Eugene has a better marathon event, but that's just the breaks. I'd never expect Houston or even Grandma's level organization in a place like PDX. Just look at muni governance, this isn't happening in a vacuum there's scant smart community leadership in that zip code.
