it was a long standing course record because nobody ever races there.
I used to live there, and Chalco Hills is a legit course, but they very rarely have collegiate meets there that are of any caliber. The time is legit and so is the course, but saying that it was a terrific because it was a long standing course record.
Further, I don't really dispute the fact that a dual National championship race would be won by D2 teams and an individual, but let's get beyond the obvious.
Aish is almost an exception. He is a remarkable athlete that D2 will only see every so often, not every year.
Further, even with him, he can do no better than score one point. Dominance aside, he's just one man.
Western State and Adams State and Abilene Christian, etc... There are only a handful of totally untouchable schools out there. Remember when Calvin got beat at an early season meet last year by a d2 meet? Remember when Arkansas got beat by ACU in cross? Big whoop. Calvin, as a team, ran like crap until late October last year. Still might be apples to apples, but at least be a little bit more reasonable.
The truth is, D2 has some outstanding athletes, but it trails off quickly. 30th man in the 10k last track season:
D2-31:10 D3-31:14
conclusion, D2 would dominate up front, but as the pack comes around, it's fairly even.
Great to see some DII and DIII discussion. DII top guys and 2-3 teams are probably better than DIII. But after that, I am pretty sure that DIII is at least as deep and maybe deeper. The 10th place team in DIII is probably even with 10th best in DII.
It's funny how this whole thing got kind of personal. There just isn't that much money at DII, most of the Kiwis at Western were on big academic scholarships because they just kill the ACT.
Good point about the different distances at NCAA's. Trust me when I say that Coach Vandenbusche could bring in 7 eskimoes and in about one year have them running like studs. The altitude and the attitude in Gunnison are just that superior!! Another great program lives in their shadow just down the road in Alamosa. You can also put good teams on the board every year from UC Davis, South Dakota, Truman, Edinboro, and SDSU to name just a few. DIII has some very storied teams from North Central, UW LaCrosse, Calvin, Middlebury and so on. Before somebody rags on Western please do me this small favor. Pick up the phone and call Coach V and after talking with him for 30 minutes, see if you don't just want to go train to be a champion. The man is a great teacher and person. Don't trip on the international thing. Repeat after me: Good running is good running is good running is good running-see you're getting already.
Peace
You can't throw out the age thing and just say "good running is good running." That is too simplistic. Running is sport where training and racing experience builds off previous years. For example, a 29 year-old guy at the peak of his career who runs 28:30 is good but running 28:30 as a freshman in college is pretty studly. So when these 25 year old Kiwis, Kenyans, and Americans (Hubbard was a pretty old dude when he finished up at Adams) are dominating the 19-20-21 year old kids you can't throw the age and experience thing out.
Duder wrote:
I hope the foreign contingent at Abiliene beats your guys at Western, not that all of the guys are cocky but certain people involved with the program sure give them a bad rep.
Duder, don't take things so personally. This message board is here for us to state our opinions. I don't see how I am giving Western State a bad rap. All I have said is that I believe based on past results that the top division 2 runners are better than the top division 3 runners. As I have stated earlier, I believe the depth may be better in Division 3 right now. As far as Western vs Abiline, the last few national results speak for themselves. And don't kid yourself, Michael Aish has won 12 national titles, has run 13:22, 28:00, 4:02, made an Olympic team and placed at the Commonwealth Games. Rugema and all the African runners at Abiline know and respect Michael Aish as well as anyone who has run against him. And by no means do I think Western State is invincible, but they do return 6 of their top 7 from a dominant team last year. And the last time I checked a single runner has never won a national championship by him or herself.
Duder wrote:
If Rugema is healthy no one from Western should be close, just like at Pomona in 2000. Ruben\'s race was a great race but he has not been near that type of runner on the results books since then. Jason Hubbard is gone. Michael Aish is gone.
Eberly?
I take things personally when I write something that i feel is clear and someone turns it completely around. I never said Aish was not good. Are you crazy, where did that come from. Open your eyes and read without thinking about something else. Abiliene is at their best right now and it should be interesting. Western runners are very good and I respect their program just not some of the attitudes that come with it, like jumping down someones throat when they are clearly not knocking the program or past runners. Take a hint.
what olympic team did aish make?
if you do not mind, please drop me a line offline - my e-mail is posted.
I would like to think that the 10th best team in div III would be as good as the 15 - 18th best team in div II. There is a comparision with div II and div III but its probably not 10th best in one division is 10th best in another division. Have to look up some research on this.
Aish cometed for New Zealand in the 10000 at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Check out the 10k lists. Whoever made the comparison of the 30th place guys, you're only going back that far because if you looked at the 23rd placed guy in Div II you'd see that he's at 30:35, the same time as the 4th ranked in Div III.
Now that is a huge freakin difference.
All sucks compared to DI
that was me and I stand by it, here's why, at Nationals in cross, you run 200+ kids, not 46 (23 and 23) I conceded up-front superiority to D2, but read my post again and feel more humble.
You are very correct that age and accumulated miles do count for quite a bit. But, the original question was concerning a comparison between DII and DIII. That's it, no more no less. DIII has the same rules regarding eligibility and there have been some "aged" runners such as Gary Wasserman from Nebraska Wesleyan. Sure, you see more of that sort of thing at DII, which I suspect is due to the availability of scholarship $ and an overall lower cost of attendance than the majority of DIII schools (WIAC being the big exception to that). I think we can get too hung up on the age or the international thing. There are plenty of great performances by Americans in DII and DIII. For instance, one contender in the DII race this year is most likely going to be Nick Cordes from Ashland. He's a 5th year senior who will probably be able to run with most anybody that Abilene or Western throws out there and is probably no older than 23.

d-1 d-1 d-1 blah blah blah... don't ever lose to a d-2 or d-3 guy then or you suck
D1 is better than D2. No comparison.
D2 is better than D3. No comparison.
Every once in a while you'll have an individual or a team who could compete at a higher level, but they're the exception, not the rule. Who cares though, I wish people would stop feeling insecure.
Goodrunningisgoodrunningisgoodrunningisgoodrunning.
not insecure. just irritated at the smugness and arrogance of certain individuals. the comment earlier that all sucks compared to d-1 is both smug and ignorant. of course the depth and ability level as a whole are better at the d-1 level. there will always be comparisons made though because when everyone lines up, the division you're in is insignificant. just because you're D1 doesn't make you a good runner. just because you're D2 or D3 doesn't make you less of a runner. because of course: good running IS good running
