Cross is new to me and I have only done 10k road races so any input on your race strategie would be great.

Often in cross country, your tactics are based on the layout of the course. For example, if you run in Van Cortland Park, the trails are very narrow and passing someone is very difficult. The races start on an open field with a short run to the trail. You have to have position before you hit the trails. You simply have to know the course and plan your race based on your strengths and the layout of the course.
Wow...Van Cortland Park! Brings back some H.S memories of myself rigging the whole 2.5 mile course! Every race is different in cross you have to play it by ear!
Go out hard for the first mile. Maintain pace for second mile. Kick like hell third mile.
Too hard to "hang back" on a 5k - can't make up the time, it's too short.
For my money, the 5k is the most painful race there is...
