Who cares about closers? As I emphasized last week, anybody backing the Alabama runner better be taking a heck of a price. Comebacks work in middle school. The higher you go, speed is more elite and it holds. That's why I didn't know one serious gambler in 24 years in Las Vegas who relied on fruit loop comebacks. Allow the public to get misty eyed in that direction.
Once Tuohy settled, the race was over. There was absolutely zero drama in the individual race the final 4 kilometers. I doubt it would have mattered if fully healthy. Tuohy was prepared to utilize 2022 tactics against a 2023 level of Valby. If she wanted to defeat Valby this year there had to be far greater speed emphasis throughout the offseason. And that type of thing would have benefitted Olympic and pro aspirations also.
This is a bit silly. Certainly no claim that fit Touhy could have won, but the loss had nothing to do with a speed emphasis on training. Neither Touhy nor Valby really has much closing speed, but Touhy is faster than Valby over 800 and 1500m.
I'm eager to see what Valby can do in track at 3000 and 5000. Perhaps we also see Touhy indoor.
