My last race was a walked marathon at age 69. Had a decent halfway split, and I usually negative-split these so I thought I had a shot at sub-5:20, but I really ran out of gas and spent the last hour basically just trying to get to the next mile marker. Ended up with 5:23, which leaves a lot of room for improvement. The next goal is 5:15, which would be 12:00/mile; used to walk the distance in ~4:45 but those days are gone, I think.
It was a race, so of course I was trying to beat as many people as I could. (If I'd just wanted to walk 26 miles without competing, I could have done that at the park.) When I was running marathons ~50 years ago, essentially no one took more that four hours to finish; but things have changed, and I was passing "runners" pretty continuously in the second half of the race, which was a help. Had a real tussle with a couple-few of them in the last mile, but got them.
So you stand above Frank Shorter, for example, in terms of running legends?Maybe get an education kid.
I don't know what you're trying to say but thanks?
Pretty obvious. Shorter ran road races into old age and got to be pretty slow (much slower than your 5k). So by the thread’s logic, you’ll always be a 15:xx 5ker and Shorter will always be slow as hell. You’re better than him.
I won my last race. Never mind that it was 2 years ago and it was a podunk 8 mile trail race. I remain a winner.
I walked a 5k with a friend in about 50-60 minutes or something. I don't know. We celebrated with a delicious Chilean Sea Bass with mushroom risotto and an A Rafanelli zinfandel.
Last weekend I ran my regional team XC Championships. 8'15k in 25'50, steady pace all the way and a sprint finish. I won, but I didnt feel very well. Next week I have nationals (Soria, Spain), which will much more competitive, there I will see my real fitness
Disclaimer: I wasn’t a distance guy in college, so my accomplishment tend toward the hobbyjogger side of the sport.
i was pretty happy with my running/racing in 2012 and 2013 running many races from 1500 through marathons, after getting into running a lot more than I had previously. Then hurt a calf muscle, later had some Achilles issues, but got some half-assed training for a (somewhat downhill) road mile I ran in 2015. That was completed in about 5:10, I think, more than 30 seconds slower than a couple of years prior.
I’m considering training for a local 5K this spring this coming spring. This would prevent me from going more than 10 years between races, but I think my last 5K was a Turkey trot in 2013!
