Sorry for the dumb question, but what exactly does it mean to redshirt?
Sorry for the dumb question, but what exactly does it mean to redshirt?
It means you forgo a season of eligibility, that is you don't do it. Each athlete gets 5 seasons of XC, indoor and outdoor. They can use their redshirt year for injury or whatever. It need not be consecutive.
How many seasons can you red-shirt? Can you red-shirt your first 3 seasons and then compete for 5 years so that you'll be 3 years older than everyone else? Obviously not, but could you expand a bit further please?
I won't claim to know all the rules but one rule is you can't compete over 25. Also, you are allowed one redshirt per season. So if you redshirt in XC, you have four years of eligibility left. If you redshirt in XC and indoor, four years left. You are confusing the seasons with taking a year of redshirting. You can't consecutively redshirt 3 XC seasons. One of XC, one of indoor, one outdoor. Pre used his redshirt in XC to go to the Olympics, then came back and won XC with the eligibility he had left. Another example is LDS missionaries (usually BYU). They compete their freshman year, take 2 years off going on their mission, whereupon they get fat (go figure), come back out of shape, redshirt the year to get in shape, and have 3 years of eligibility left. They are 2 years older than other athletes but haven't had consistent training. hope this helps.
I've been out of school a few years, but as I recall, you can be a full time student for a maximum of 5 years, in which you have 4 seasons of any particular sport. A lot of runners who can't make the team as a frosh redshirt their freshman year. As a redshirt, you can still compete in a few races, but you can't travel with your team (no support from school, team vans, lunch money, or hotels). If you redshirt your first year, you will be considered a freshman during your first real season competing on the team, even though you may be a sophomore in school. You can redshirt for any year (or just for a season such as XC or track) during your 5 years. Obviously if you compete your first 4 years in a row, then you're done.
If you graduate in 4 years, but only competed three seasons in XC or track, you are allowed to use your 4th season of eligibility in grad school. I'm not 100% sure if this works if you transfer for grad school.
