Ok what type of health insurance do you have that will allow you to go to the best doctors in the nation? It is not like you can go to these doctors on a HMO plan with a $10 copay or can you?

It's called spending out of my own pocket.
I don't have any health insurance except for catastrophic insurance.
Gerard Hartmann cut us a good deal because he's a good guy. I made enough money doing some Olympic merchandise stuff to pay for the trip to Ireland. That was the most expensive part of the whole deal.
Besides that I've seen 2 podiatrist, and one chiropractor. That wouldn't cost too much right there, and I planned 2 of the trips around other things so I didn't have to buy a plane ticket. I wasn't charged for one visit and am pretty sure I got special rates on 2 of the other ones. (I'm not sure if the people want me revealing their names so I won't). I didn't even ask for these things, but these doctors realize the situation I'm in and how little support is out there.
I'm dedicating basically a large part of my life to this. I came to the conclusion this year, I can't be cheap when it comes to my health. If I win a road race that's like $3000 right there and will pay for all the medical care. I definitely would go see doctors more often (and would have seen someone here in Flagstaff to get an opinion) if I had insurance, but I don't so I did some self diagnosis, and tried some self remedies. Plantar is a common running injury although it looks like I had nerve damage instead, but all the doctors agreed that if I saw them first they said they would have told me I have plantar.
I wish I had been top 3 at USATFs last year to get medical insurance as I wouldn't have to think twice before seeing a doctor. I think it's a major drawback of USATF. Unless you're at the top, you basically get nothing. Sure they've had financial difficulties, and I'm all for earning your keep, but all of the major league sports have minimum salaries, etc that help the lower echelon guys out. USATFs first priority should be in expanding its medical insurance I believe. That's the one major drawback from not working. I used to get chiropractor care, and tons of other stuff for basically free when I worked. But it's the price I pay I guess for doing things on my own. I want to train with my own coach, my own way, and as a result I don't get some of the benefits of being in one of the sponsored groups. It's a trade-off that is worth it however, because I've got the best coach in the world and am doing high low training like no one else. That's just my opinion.
