I was going to go and take my son, but the CHEAPEST tickets were 60 bucks. Straight-away seats were starting at $150. Absolutely ridiculous. It doesn't feel like it was that long ago I bought GA level tickets for $10-$15.
Do people not understand that Track and Field, or as the rest of the world calls it, “Athletics,” is more popular everywhere than it is in the United States?
Also I read somewhere that the capacity at Hayward is somewhere around 13,000, give or take. The pictures and video I saw of the meet showed me that a lot of those seats were filled.
I don’t have a solution but from here on out, there should be a stipulation that if you start one of these threads that you also offer a viable solution. Don’t just b1tch & moan.
Why b*och and moan about the number of daily threads. Seeing you are incapable of refraining from comments says more about you than it does the OP.
My suggestion would be to switch Eugene to August (or another month?) and not make it the final. Have the September final in a city where there are not 1,000 other academic and/or sporting events going on that will draw from ticket sales. The final will never draw in September in the United States. There's just too much happening and not enough interest.
The DL final is held every year in September. The final rotates among the 15 host cities. The pre meet will now go back to being a regular dl meet in 2024, probably in May as usual. In 2038 we can have this discussion again if Eugene is still part of DL rota.

The week before the meet tickets were going for $15. There were also about a dozen different groups and offerings that gave tickets free to youth and a parent to go with. My wife and I took our two kids to both days and we paid $0 for tickets. And I know a lot of other people who did the same.
As others have mentioned: By the end the tickets were all sold and accounted for. The empty seats were due to a combination of people who had tickets not going as well as a ton of people on the concourse and standing in the shade at any given moment. Getting all tickets into the hands of spectators isn’t the problem. Or at least it wasn’t this year.

BINGO. i was waiting for someone to get practical. i figured with the names on the marquee it had to be something practical. i've been to a couple european events and they weren't anywhere near that price.
i was also curious what the local marketing was like. it's a track mecca but it needs to be like a $20 ticket everyone in town knows about.
also bears noting they have recently hosted a couple big, lengthy events at which point fair or unfair a DL meet is dwindling returns.
the people suggesting a 2-fer are straining. you're saying be out in summer weather from mid-day to night.

Right now, are people allowed to sell their unused comp tickets in the certified resale market? If not, that should change first. Maybe there is not much incentive if the most they get is $15 / ticket?

Colleges got sick of tired old ways at the NCAA Indianapolis and Conferences offices and dumped them, lock, stock, and barrel this past summer for two arch rivals in the $Trillion streaming market, the ESPN and Fox Sports. We should look into doing that too.
Your solution is to hold the meet in the LA Coliseum that doesn't even have a track?
Having a TRACK meet without a TRACK would probably not work out so well.
Where will everyone run in 2028? It won't be at the Coliseum?
USC, which has a 99 year lease on the LA Coliseum, gave the 2028 LA Olympics a 1 time right to put in a temporary track, as long as they agreed to work 24 hours per day to take down the track IMMEDIATELY after the Olympics, so it can go back to being a football field ASAP.
There is ZERO chance that USC would agree to let the Diamond League put in a track in the LA Coliseum during football season.
Also, just for those people who are curious, the LA Coliseum does not currently have enough space for a 400 meter track. So in 2028 the track will be built on a 20 or 30 foot elevation and it will cover the first 10 or 15 rows of seats. It's a pretty big project, and time consuming and expensive to put into place.

The ticket prices for the seats aren't the real problem. The bigger problem is the airfare and hotel prices.
There are plenty of people who wouldn't mind paying $60 for a seat, but they don't want to pay $300 or more per night for a hotel room PLUS the airfare.
It was a great meet with great action and some fantastic performances. The fan zone outside of the stadium was cool. Athletes mingled with fans, posed for selfies, and signed autographs. Valarie Allman gave me a huge bear hug when I wished her congratulations and I am a total stranger to her. Does any other sport or event within our sport offer this sort of access? No!
There were empty seats. That is kind of sad, but I blame Tracktown/Ticketmaster for their convoluted and confusing pricing schemes. I have also mentioned in other threads that their insistence on paperless ticketing scares off less tech savvy older fans and those not wanting to download yet another app on their phones.
If you missed it, too bad! Too far for travel or too expensive for your budget? Oh, well. I guess that puts a lot of other things that you like out of range. Until someone comes to your rescue with a better stadium located closer to your house, then you are going to have to enjoy the meet on TV or streaming. For most of America, flying to Portland, renting a car, booking a hotel room, and buying tix for this meet weekend is still cheaper than a trip to Disney, Las Vegas, or NYC. I have run out of sympathy for those that pass and bash on, well, almost everything. Two indoor worlds, one outdoors, a DL final, many USATF and Olympic Trials, and two (soon to be three) Summer Olympics competitions have provided me with many happy memories and experiences. I'm not rich but, I choose to indulge my passions during this one shot at life.
You can choose to live or you can choose to spend your days angry because nothing is perfect. Your days always grow shorter. Seems a pity to waste what time you have waiting for someone with money to build your dream scenario.

They do pay those amounts for college and football games. The issue is not Eugene. It's the fans perception that it's expensive for a track meet which is more their problem than the venue/location.

I went to the Mt SAC Relays and my hotel was only $110.
$300 - $400 for the "cheap" hotels in Eugene is a ridiculous price.

People kind of have set expectations out of Disney, Vegas, New York. Those are all destinations in themselves. Eugene is not a destination without this track meet. And then you don't even know who is running till a couple days before. So people who can go can go, but they will mostly be people who don't require lodging or air fare.

Yup! Hotels are INSANE in Eugene and so are most Airbnbs.
