The Panama Canal drying up is another example of a way society is technologically going backwards, not forwards

Despite what the billionaires would like you to believe all the huge technological achievements were mostly funded and competed by governments, not corporations.

Hoover Dam: government, Panama Canal: government, Moon landing: government, GPS System: government.

We stopped funding any science or development and left that to corporations what they came up with was printers that shut off if you don't pay a subscription, heated car seats that need a subscription, Free games that you have to pay a bunch of money to play, pop-up adds on everything.

We could figure out how to build those things, if somebody paid to do it, but there's no money to be made in doing it... so now it's China or Dubai or Saudi Arabia who are building the fancy things because their governments have the money to do it.

We gave our NASA money to Elon so he gets to cut off Ukraine's telecommunications whenever they're a threat to his buddies in Russia, and he doesn't do anything. It's still NASA that's landing rovers on Mars that drive around for years. Elon's trying to figure out how to project Tesla ads on the moon.

Despite what the socialists would like for you to believe, the only time government projects are successful are when they are financed in the name of conquest and colonialism. The reason the government is successful in these types of projects is because they use them to concentrate wealth rather than redistribute it. The Saudis and Chinese get this.

Where did socialism enter this at all for you? It’s probably more exceptionalism than anything. The US government has definitely *increased* funding for research. Just one example: There are 17 US Department of Energy national laboratories. There are several DOD research labs… I happen to know that for just one of those DOE labs, they spend over $2B USD per year directly for research. These research labs have grown exponentially over the past 20 years… any failure of research is not caused by a lack of federal funding.

You are actually agreeing with my point. America and Europe governments don’t spend any money conquering and colonizing anymore so their governments don’t do anything useful.

Yeah, except China is a communist/socialist country and they build all kinds of big projects. Communist Russia was the first to put a man in orbit. When we built big projects in the US they were social programs in a few cases. Look at the big public works projects launched by FDR in the 30's.

You sound like you went to school in America... for the rest of the idiots as well, the Panama canal is mostly fresh water for lots of reasons (corrosion if they used salt water, the lakes that make up most of the canal are fresh water so you'd mess up those ecosystems) so you can't just pump in ocean water, it would not end well.

The Panama Canal is primarily supplied with fresh water from Gatun Lake, which is one of the largest man made lakes in the world. That region is under similar drought conditions as what we saw in the US around Lake Mead. Lake levels at Gatun are at all time lows. If you look at a map of Lake Gatun, you will see that it is massive and cannot just have its water levels restored by pumping water in from other sources. The lake relies on rainfall and there is nowhere else to just "pump" water from to fill it up again.

If you really want to do the "why can't we do things like in the olden days", you should be asking why the US could spend @$15 billion in today's dollars to build the Panama Canal, but can't put that kind of money towards high speed rail, upgrading the grid to handle more solar and wind and build out charging infrastructure for EVs?

High speed rail isn't that great of an idea for the vast majority of the US.

Upgrading our grid system is a much better investment.

China and the USSR are/were both authoritarian regimes that want/wanted to dominate the world.

China's current mega projects in Africa and South America are NOT about creating a more fair/egalitarian world, the are about China becoming natural resource dominant.

The same can be said about the USSR. Their motives for putting a man in orbit were not altruistic. They wanted to dominate space so that they could dominate the world.

FDRs primary goal was get the United States out of the Great Depression. His ideas didn't actually work. It was the US's involvement in WWII that got us out of the Depression.

The United States of America are/were an authoritarian regime that want/wanted to dominate the world. Surely, having lived through the Covid Hoax and BLM/Antifa riots to se the stage for the stolen election of 2020, nobody can really believe that the USA is a functioning "democracy" under the "rule of law."
