Kelati GET OUT OF LANE 1!!!!!!!!!

Kelati ran a 15:25 in a 14:00 race. She had no business being in that race. Who the F was that guy in the brown shirt who lifted her up at the finish and was hugging the other women. Also, anyone know how long Cranny stayed in the race?

Even if the math says that the distance to move around is negligible, Tsegay had to spend mental energy to move around Kelati and was probably annoyed about it. She probably also had to worry that Kelati would dart out to lane 2 at any moment. Kelati should have been told to move out to lane 3 or 4 so that Tsegay didn't have to worry about her at all.

I guess part of the difficulty is that the nature of the Diamond League Final is a bit ambiguous. Is it supposed to be a championship race like Worlds or the Olympics or more in line with the other Diamond League races? I tend to see it like the other Diamond League races. My opinion on how Kelati should have acted would be different if it were the Olympic or WC final.

Alicia Monson ran 14:45, unlike Kelati she was not in danger of being lapped. No one in a world class 5000 should get lapped.

Vilifying someone for a common move is over the top. They probably aren't instructed as to what to do in the event of being lapped where the competition is usually close enough together to not expect that to happen. But she ran 14:00.21. Going around even one lapped runner made the difference. Still, I expect this one is not going to withstand the drug tests for much longer.

Lapped runners should hug the rail, not swing wide at the last minute.

I hadn't watched the race and I just watched the whole thing now.

Having seen it, I'm quite confident that having a rabbit in front of her to chase down for a lap gave her a boost, and improved her time far more than the extra 50cm (max) cost her.

You could just as easily argue that having someone to chase down on the backstretch was HELPFUL. Or that the moment Tsegay got clipped on the heel by second place and motioned her to back off cost her .22s. Or that the pacers didn’t last anywhere close to where they were supposed to cost her time. She ran 14:00.21. There is no perfect WR. Someone will probably break 14 next year.

I have a high-level math background. "The math" does not "say" that .21 seconds = 1.3 meters. That calculation implies running in a straight line that is unimpeded at the exact pace that she was running at the time of the pass, with no non-linear movements. That calculation does not account for the slight direction and force corrections for running around a human being at a state of near-exhaustion. Slight direction and force corrections would easily account for more than .21 seconds, which is about the amount of time it takes for you to start and stop your watch.

The officials should be monitoring the situation in the last quarter of the race and yelling at the trailing athlete to move out and stay out once the leader gets within 10 metres of lapping them and DQ and fine anyone who doesn’t move out when the time comes.

You see this regularly in cycling in individual time trials and rarely do the riders getting caught impede the faster rider from taking the fastest line on the course.

In major meets in a stadium with big screens it is even easier for all athletes to stay aware of what is happening in the race so even less forgivable not to move out.

At most, agreed, and even 10cm is a 10x overestimate. See post #29, where I calculated it to be about 7mm extra, and surely under 1cm extra even if she didn't run the exact line I calculated.

For fun, I just took a look to see how far out the water table was in last year's Worlds 5000, where Jakob went out to get water. The water table was in lane 5. You deviate from lane 1 three lanes to reach it, about 3x1.22=3.66m lateral deviation. Even that is only 27cm extra distance to go from lane 1 to lane 4 to lane 1 again. (Jakob went out to get water two times, so about 54cm extra for the two times.) That's less than a 12-inch ruler extra... and maybe everyone should go out to the water table in a 90 degree F race.

Gotta disagree. While moving out into lane 2 is certainly a respectable move, it by no mean should be required and it didn't cost Tsegay a sub 14 clocking. Like it or not, Kelati is still in the race. She's running (slow at her level) and still competing.

It definitely didn't cost her .22 seconds, because a world class runner like her would know how to properly lap a runner on a straightaway. It's no different time wise than passing someone in the home stretch. It seems like something minor to harp on as the math has already been very clearly explained.
