You can see 10 seconds into this, just as Ferguson passes the 400m start in lane 7, there is a judge that is crouching down and appears to be intently focussed on those outer lanes - and you could make a solid guess they are looking specifically at Ferguson who is very close to the line.
Looking closely it really looks like it's the 10m before and after that 400m start that he was pinched for. To the eye it appears highly likely at the very least he has stood on the inside curve, but man - a DQ for that, as has been alluded to, is seems really disproportionate.
Then again it's the rule, it exists for a reason and unfortunately the most minor infraction is fundamentally the same as a major one. You simply can't leave that one up for a sliding scale judgement. Absolutely hate to see it because it affected the outcome in no way shape or form but WF just needs to be more careful in moments of the race he has total control over (shrugs shoulders).
