Not a great interview, but puts a bit of perspective on his Olympic career.

I was surprised to see RW ask Viren, "In your prime, you had a resting heart rate of 32. Is that correct, and do you know what it is today?"
Is this HR rare enough to comment on? My resting HR when fit was 37. My well-trained wife's was 34. I have also coached runners whose HR's dropped to a steady 34 (female) and 31 (male). A number of other guys with 35-37, and the rest mostly in the 42-45 range.
I thought mid-30s was normal for distance runners until I read the quote.
I do remember once reading an interview with Olga Appell (remember her?) and she claimed a resting HR of 25 with a marathon race pulse of 145. These are low numbers.
Hadd - I know you know your stuff, but this is a RW article... 60-70 resting HR is very fit.
32 is freakin' unbelievable!!! Is he even alive?? (being sarcastic).
regarding the heart rates you quoted, are those morning resting heart rates (i.e. lying down) or is that sitting up?
also, jim ryun's was widely reported to be 72 when he set the mile record. at the other end, i remember indurain claiming 28. (both of these numbers were widely reported, but i don't recall seeing a direct quote from either
Olga Appell's (my wife) pulse was consistently at 37 range with a few times monitored at 35 (with HR monitor) She has stopped running seriously but still has a basal rate of 43.
I heard Pre's HR was 9
Ah, yes, but the real question is: who would win in a 'lowest heart rate' contest...
Oh christ, you know the rest...

I hear it's even lower now.
Oldguy, that was real wit!
The numbers I quoted are morning resting heart rates supine (lying down on yr back).
Utah Ute, good to hear from you. I know I read those numbers for your wife. I am almost certain it was in an American mag? Running Times, maybe? This would have been in her great period, early to mid-90s.
I actually just gave away a gazillion old mags to some of my young runners and recall that your wife was on the cover of one (again Running Times from 1995??). She had dark glasses on and appeared to have Lynn Jennings (?) in her wake? I?ll ask around and see if I can get it back and be more precise.
I am trying to recall the exact article in which the HR?s were quoted. It was not really an interview with your wife, but maybe with someone who coached her (yourself?). Anyway, I was wrong to write that "she claimed..." My apologies.
Anyway, the numbers 25 at resting and 145 at marathon pace, always stuck in my mind. Obviously, you will know the real story better than the journalist. I won?t quote them anymore.
Wish your wife well, she was one hell of a runner.
