Criticism of the pacers is a bit bizarre to me…if you watch the race video, they went out in 55.56 and had totally gapped the field, no one wanted to go with them. The French pacer dropped back to a slower pace because he saw no point in running way out front of a group that wasn’t committed to the pace—don’t think you guys are assigning the blame correctly here.
Well, the might be nothing Nuguse can do. Jakob might just be better. What would you do if you had to play basketball against Jokic? Some athletes are just better.
But that isn't really the point. Nuguse did everything he could do and got second place. That is amazing for a guy that wasn't even a lock to win all his NCAA races a couple years again.
The criteria for "doing well" can't automatically be setting a WR or beating the best guy on the planet. Nuguse is AWESOME and that still doesn't mean he's guaranteed to win a medal at the next WC or OG. That's okay...
Good, optimistic interview that makes it hard not to like the guy. I'd be amused if someone now replies "He's NOT devastated? He should be, that's why he's losing to Yakob". Observation #2: it would've been fun in his interview if he'd said that "Yakob is an up-and-coming runner, he's improving a lot" (alluding to yakob's interview). Too classy though.
I do think the trick for the field to beat Jakob at the WCs are as follows:
1. Don’t rabbit for him like Tim did at the Olympics. If you set the pace for a sub 3:29 race you’re doing Jakob a favor.
2. Pump the brakes on the first lap. Jakob likes to get out further back the first 200m and then move to the front. Make that first 200m a 29 and once Jakob tries to take the lead, surge back ahead and slow it down. This won’t work the whole race, but it hurts Jakobs chances if the first lap is a 59 instead of a 56.
3. Force Jakob to fight for the lead and protect it from surges the entire race. He will have less kick at the end this way although it tires out other runners too. Still if you have 2 or three Kenyans or three On guys in the final and they each press Jakob with one surge it’ll weaken him
4. If Jakob lets someone by him outside of the last 600m, slow it down. If Jakob wants a fast pace make him lead and make him fight for it.
Jakobs the fittest 1500m man in the world, but there are avenues to beat him. For instance, Jakob would get clobbered in the 2016 final. If he lets it go slow the kickers get him and if he pushes the pace, Kiprop just sits on him.
This is the real truth. Learning how to race especially on the European/World circuit is tough. Jakob had to learn this. it is not just coming in with fast times, but learning how to race with extremely talented folks around you and the mental games and timing. Yared will learn from this.
I never start threads making negative statements about any athlete. You gals & guys force me to make less than pleasant statements about athletes because too many of you say over the top comments. Over the top comments must come from the athlete or blood relatives or close friends.
Nuguse is not a favorite to medal. Show me betting odds backing up your statement. Nuguse may medal but certainly not favored to medal.
