Drama at NCAA WEST - Kemboi jogs the 1500 then WINS 10k - She should be DQd

Seems like they probably decided the triple was too much and had her mail in the 1500, but the stomach issues don't seem impossible. With a 9 (9:30?) 10k start and the 1500 ~2 hours before, eating would be tricky. The move (for me) would be to risk a larger meal a little closer to the 1500 than you'd normally do. If she has a sensitive stomach, doesn't seem impossible that the meal timing could end up with her stomach being wrecked for the 1500 but fine for the 10k.

Lavier was in the race. She ran 4:24.36 and finished 43rd.

By the way the runner who did miss out was ranked 167th on the 1500 qualifier list and 83rd in the West.

It’s possible she’s on her period and she was having cramps/feeling ill in the 1500 and painkillers kicked in/body calmed down 2 hours later…that’s what “stomach issues” suggests to me to be honest.

Kemboi will be racing the 5k though. If she gets DQ'd she gets DQ'd for everything.

We don’t know what truly happened. Because she is an amazing runner we are mad. This is the type of person that can absolutely feel awful for a 1500m and come back to destroy a 10k a couple hours later. Most normal people would fold under that. Until anyone proves anything I’m giving the athlete the benefit of doubt. A lot of people just want to see a great athlete be kicked out of the meet and that’s sad.

It doesn't matter, she rightfully earned the right to race as the 48th in the region who intended to compete in the 1500. Kemboi and her coaches ROBBED this runner of the opportunity.

Stop making it seem like 167 and 83rd in the region is low ranked. She ran 4:20 - a legit time. Every year people in the 70s or 80s make it in the 1500m because every 5k runner, 800 runner, and steeplechaser runs a 1500 but choses to focus on a different event at regionals.

It's not about if that athlete would have had a chance to advance, it's about the fact that she EARNED it. Everyone who toes the line has a chance, and a 1% chance of advancing is a lot better than a 0% chance because she wasn't allowed to race.

The practical answer is it happens in the 5000 all the time. Why? becasue its the last distance event. You could do it in other events like the 10000 but then you would be out for the meet.

You do realize that the other 47 runners were women too? Kemboi was 44 seconds behind 47th place. What are the odds that Kemboi would be the only athlete out of 48 with such timing?

Am I the only one who watched? She came to the line standing upright and moving aroung.trying to earn a false start. Officials told her not to move and then still stood upright until everyone started. She was giggling about it.

You do realize that some women have heavier/harsher periods than others? That not all women react to their period the same way? That women don’t have cramps at all points in our periods? You do realize Salpeter dropped out of Tokyo because of cramps? That Dina Asher-Smith had cramps at Worlds last year? Is that not possible because other women didn’t have the same issue?

I don’t know if she actually had her period or not but it’s the height of absurdity and typical letsrun idiocy to argue that cramps aren’t possible because they only affected one woman.

In addition to taking a spot from another 1500 runner, don't forget that had she run an all-out 1500 she may not have won the 10k. She may not have even qualified. The rule is in place to keep the integrity of all events and the meet in general.

You have to be either incredibly naive or stupid to think this was at all medical as her coach claims. She made a mockery of it. Had she run 4:32 and was with the group for 800m, it would be so much harder to argue and identify sure, but she was giggling on the line, she was jogging from the start and she ran 5:12. Her coach couldn’t even coach her up on how to disguise their blatant disrespect.

End of the day, nothing is going to happen now, she can’t be held accountable because the officials did nothing, but the true character of her coach and the Utah Valley program has been exposed.

No. That isn't an additional item because had she tried in the 1500, she wouldn't have taken a spot away from someone. It is one or the other.

She ran the 800. She would have had a hard double if she got the 1500 spot too. She was so far down the lists that she accepted both races hoping to get one of them. No harm done.

And? For Tuohy to win the 5000m within and hour and a half of the 1500m would be like the Miracle on Ice. She would have won the 5000m standing alone easily.

When people see something this blatant they will call it out.

If Touhy dropped out of a race due stomach issues and/or cramps, all the fanboys would be saying boohoo poor Tuohy.

They would definitely NOT be attacking her and her coaches and trying to get her DQ'd.
