I use a razor which has a disposable 5 blade cartridge/head. I shave every day for work (5 days a week) and sometimes on the weekends if I'm going to see people. I change out my razor once a month. By the end of the month it's really not that good and I can feel the instant difference with a new one.
The point - I just read that you are suppose to change your disposable razor every 5 to 7 shaves! Does anybody do this? Is my keeping mine for a month unusual? I thought I was the norm. What do you all do?
As long as it's clean and it works I don't really know why anyone would replace it after five uses. Maybe they have wiry hair and it gets blunt. In which case I would understand that.
I replace a blade after about 2 to 4 shaves. A box of 100 from Amazon is about $10 and lasts about a year. There’s a learning curve to using them but the shave is much closer and without any skin irritation.
It is obvious that the razor industry would like you to change your razor as often as possible! It all depends on the individual. Thicker whiskers or a fuller 'face of hair' will dull-out the blade quicker. I use common sense, when I feel the drag, I know it is time to change the blade... however long that is.

This. DE Safety Razor is the best and most economical way to shave.

Same. Any tips or links for improving technique?
My experience has been that I had to find a very specific razor/blade set up that worked for me before I finally was a convert to safety razors. I use a Merkur Progress which is an adjustable and couple that with either Gillette Platinum or Silver Blue blades. Sometimes I'll roll with a Wilkinson Sword blade. I am a bald, swarthy man with hair/stubble that is like sandpaper, so I know all too well the struggle in getting past the safety razor learning curve.
Other razors have been pretty lousy for me. The Rex Ambassador was one of the worst purchases I have ever made. Blades have run the gamut, but my experience is that any of the Gillette Seven O'Clock shadow blades will leave weird phantom nicks despite good technique. Everyone is different so you'll need to play shave scientist via trial and error until you find a good shave set up.
