What are they known for anyway? How do their academics compare to NAU?
They are the second best university in the Boston area for math and physics, whereas NAU is the best school for both in Flagstaff.
How can there be a best university for math? Math is what it is, can be learned anywhere, and by college age the top students have already moved beyond classes and textbooks.
Physics, engineering, etc yes they do need "hands on" as at MIT, and they will competently teach you whatever applied math is corequisite.

Ivy league schools don't really have the same motivation to specialize.
Without athletic scholarships their model just turns to getting the best kids that want to go to Harvard and can get in/can afford it. They don't have to turn away a great XC kid to allow a great thrower to come in. They could sign 10 javelin throwers if they could find that many with the grades and desire to go there. It still wouldn't really impact if another group can be successful independently.
As long as the event has the coaching staff available and the infrastructure in place to make the event succeed then they be good in whatever event they find demand for.
It's really every other school that has to make the decision on where they invest scholarships to decide what the area of focus might be.

Harvard actually has significant recruiting advantages over most fully funded track teams. They have an unlimited financial aid packages - both in the value and in the number. So they can have 30 men on their team paying no tuition/room/board even though the NCAA limit is 12 scholarships.
Their academic reputation helps because those that don't qualify for financial aid are willing to pay more for the reputation. And everyone on the planet has heard of Harvard, Princeton, Yale etc so they can recruit much easier.
Harvard athletics does have the ability to use waivers to get athletes in with a much lower GPA than non-athletes.

Foreign alums don't donate much at all. 99% of their donors are USA born citizens. they don't have a Chang School of Engineering or a Singh School of Medicine.

Wilson brought Amo in and they are friends so I wouldn’t be so sure about that.
