Who says that? But why is it that it is never "so and so is awesome" but instead always involves a comparison to Tuohy? LOLL. Look at the name of this thread.
That is the point.....it seems like a backhanded way to put down Tuohy yet they apparently think of Tuohy as the "standard" to whom the next talent must be compared. Agree...just say Amina, or Margot, or Mia, or whoever has a bright future.
Exactly. AM has a bright future. I am glad you are able to recognize this, although it is really rich that you are posting in this thread when your user name involves KT. But at least you can recognize that AM has a bright future.

Do yo have foreknowledge? Any of us could be struck and killed by lightning now, and have no future this side of death.

Indeed. We need to qualify everything. So AM likely has a bright future if she indeed stays alive. I thought that was implicit in the observation but of course being alive is a necessary but not sufficient condition for her bright future. Thank you for pointing out the obvious but a nice reminder.

Rich? Am I not allowed to express and opinion on AM?
Well she has a very bright present, so there’s that. No reason to think it will change.
KT is great but one of her biggest fans Astro thinks she will have to likely retire from elite racing shortly after college as he has told us that the only way she could be super competitive is to take PEDs, and of course she would never do that. He posted this fairly recently.

You are welcome to post on any topic. I was simply pointing out that your username is interesting.

well maybe I should make up a new unregistered name every time I post in a new thread as so many do?
Whatever pleases you. Tuohy is fast. It is not easy being the top one. She won’t have that problem after college. This might be a relief to her that she will just be one of the contenders instead of the top dog.
Maatoug seems to have a good grasp of her current ability level. Her goal is European U23 Championships this summer. I imagine she'll attempt the 1500.
In that Dutch interview a year ago she said she planned to stay 2 years at Duke and hopefully graduate in May 2024. She said she was uncertain what she would do at that point. It was before she got the feel for American college life and team camaraderie, so I won't be surprised if she does pursues a masters degree and stays another year, if she has full eligibility.
There seems to be conflict there. Maatoug was listed as sophomore during cross country and indoors but some sources have listed her as junior during this outdoor season.
If she decides to pursue running seriously after college, many of the Dutch middle distance types like Tony Van Diepen and now Niels Laros train in Flagstaff during the winter.
That's going to be a tough call for Maatoug. High aspirations and expectations within that family. She has a much older sister who is already an elected member of the Dutch House of Representatives.

Yes with her intelligence and expectations AM may not pursue athletics the way someone like KT would. And again KT is smart too and has options but AM may feel more pressure to focus on other endeavors.
If Maatoug is going to have a successful pro career she needs to improve her race strategy and confidence level to win races when the opportunity is there. Currently she tends to get stuck on the rail and allow others to get the jump on her at the crucial stage late in the race.
She won the Dutch Indoor 800 Championship in 2022. That's her biggest victory to date. Otherwise her tactics and ability level are lending to lots of 2nd through 4th place finishes in important races. I mentioned that here and elsewhere before the ACC Indoor Championship. It's big contrast to Tuohy, who has known how to win throughout her career.
Maatoug can't be expected to win anything at NCAAs this year. There are many girls simply better than her right now. But this is what I'm referring to, all within the current school year:

* 4th in ACC Cross Country
* 4th in European U23 Cross Country
* Close 2nd indoors to Addy Wiley
* 3rd in ACC Indoor 800 final
* 2nd in ACC Indoor 3000 final
* 2nd to Sam Tran at Duke Invitational 1500
* 2nd in ACC Outdoor 1500 final
* 4th in ACC Outdoor 5000 final
Winning will come, the range is great; 800 to xc. In some of these, she was even doubling.
These are all great finishes! I can't imagine the transition this young woman has gone though a) another country b) adjusting to the NCAA Div 1 training & schedule is hard enough for Americans! Sure, she has an excellent team this year, hopefully great support. To get top finish after top finish is impressive!
