Just goes to show how incredible Webb and Ryun actually were. ....Ryun could've closed that race in 53.xx! Can you imagine if he had a Sowinski, mondo track and modern shoes!?!
Because racing really gets started at that point and he did not want to influence the racing, positioning and tactics. He respected them and got out of their way
I don’t disagree with that but “Sowinski was jogging and still pulling away” is a silly thing to say. He can run 55s-57s for 2-3 laps while looking relaxed but he’s not “jogging” or he’d have faster than a 4:01.4 mile PR (he tried to break 4 at Drake a few years ago and failed).
would I be correct in assuming that the entire field was Nike-shod? Or was there someone in the field capable of an original thought? You know, the type who grasps that an ice cream float isn't necessarily root beer and vanilla but rather YOUR OWN choice of soda and ice cream.

Hate to state the obvious, but put these kids in 2017 shoes and we have a bunch of 4:01 and 4:02s. ....Just the way it used to always play out!

Yeah and Jakob regressed from 3:31 at age 17 (2017/18 shoes) to 3:34 at 18 and 3:32 at 20 (adding 4 seconds because of super spikes like you’re saying).
as frustrating as it was for Mike Smith to see Aaron Sahlman run on an injured leg it musta been nice to see his other prized recruit Clay Shivley run a 4:01. he looked really good out there.
And for Oregon you not only have Birnbaum and Burns but Tayson Echohawk goes 4:01.

and also for Oregon, per the announcers, is the guy who won the 800 and didn’t look too winded (1:48)
What expectations? Most people expected they wouldn't get the HSR. A 3:57.5 is perfectly in line with their progression. 3:53 is light years away from what any of them have shown over 800m/1mile.
Burns created the expectations with his talk before the race. Hopefully this teaches him a lesson in humility and respect for his elders. 3:53 is no joke!
He only created "expectations" for those delusional to think he was remotely close of that time. No well reasoned college student and beyond could expect them to get 3:55 or lower. The unfortunate reality is that they are highly talented, but please do not underestimate and instead try to recognize the leg speed and endurance it takes to run 3:53

A person in the race literally said they were going for the record. Those expectations.
That doesn't create expectations. That's just a statement.

1. Burns: so inconsistent man. Such a talent but it feels like he can only put it together 25% of the time. Is it crazy to suggest the mile not even be his best event? At this point I would be VERY interested to see him take a shot at that 10k record. Not everyday someone with 3:59 (4:03 tonight) speed and 13:37 strength takes a shot at it.
2. Matsatsa: What a beast. 7 second PR. I think he could get to close to 1:46.45 this year. I know it sounds crazy, but he obviously has the strength and he ran 1:48.2 indoors.
3. Clay Shivley: 4:01 as just a junior. Looks like lightning strikes every 50 years or so in Kansas. I hope he takes another shot at sub 4 later this season.
4. What a historic race. 4 under 4! Can you imagine if this happened in 2018? People would be loosing it. Really shows how far distance running in the US has come in the last few years. You can blame the shoes but it has to be bigger than that. Hard to believe that 25ish years ago no high schooler in the US broke 9 in the 3200.
Finally someone with some sense showed up and said this. Bitter, out of touch old timers insinuating that 'the super shoes' (oddly enough, never specific in naming which just vague references to a poorly understood generalization) giving 4 seconds over the mile, utterly ridiculous. If what they say is true then El Guerrouj's world record should have been easily shattered by hordes of previous 3:29-3:30 runners already.
Is he also the first HSer under 4:00 who has never run cross country?
What a talent!
Where is his family from? Tinoda Matsata... unusual name. Yes as the other poster says mentioning his race may trigger people but is he of East African descent as one might expect....?
So just because someone isn't named Bob, Joe, or Jimmy you assume he's from another country?
Matsata is from Zimbabwe. My guess is his parents or grandparents are from there.
Great race, but a touch disappointing given the high expectations.

My son is friends with Birnbaum, there was no actual expectation of 3:53 by any of these guys.
3:55-3:56? Yes, that was the ‘shoot the moon goal’.

What hoards of sub 3:30 guys? Outside of the EPO era when was 3:30 being broke on a regular basis? Instead we get a bunch of 3:32 guys all running 3:29.... Or in this case 4:03 guys running 3:59...
