So by way of background, I was a middle distance guy who ran in college (when healthy) at a level just below making NCAA Div. 1 championship meet. Mostly checkered running since then. I try to run 3-4 miles 3 times a week. Pacing varies from just under 7 minute pace to as high as 10 minutes per mile when i jog with my wife. When I bother to check my heartrate, it pretty much always lands close to 155 unless I am really pushing it and it might be up around 165. I'm 58, if I go by my max heartrate, I'm running WAY too hard, but frankly it doesn't feel like it, and I can keep running at that 160+ rate for probably an entire run. Conversely, 10 minute pace which feels super slow, still doesn't really take my heart rate below 150. I know that I am not working too hard at that pace. Should I just forget the heart rate mumbo jumbo as being fairly unreliable at my age? Or should I be more careful and pretty much never run at a strenuous level for any length of time.
