Not sure if this was noted in another thread but this is such a crap situation all around. Athlete did everything right and is let down by incompetent coaches/administrators and NCAA not caring about punishing the right people
what is the actual rule... His post says "14 men at 8 track meets". Does that means a school must have 8 separate meets and would need 14 members of the team to race in during one outdoor track season? seems like a lot of schools would be in violation of that?
The NCAA requires every schools team in every sport to participate in a minimum number of contests with a minimum number of participants to count as "sponsoring" the sport. I'd imagine it has something to do with not being able to skirt around title ix rules and actually having to let the athletes compete in the sport
I found this buried in the division 1 manual: 20.10.6.3.7 Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field. A member institution may receive credit for sponsoring both indoor track and field and outdoor track and field, provided its team participates in a total of at least eight indoor and outdoor meets during the year, including at least three indoor and three outdoor meets. (Revised: 4/25/18 effective 8/1/18)
also, on page 400 if the D1 Manual it spells out by sport
20.10.6.3 Minimum Contests and Participants Requirements for Sports Sponsorship. In each sport, the institution's team shall engage in at least a minimum number of intercollegiate contests (against four-year, degree-granting collegiate institutions) each year. In the individual sports and women's rowing, the institution's team shall include a minimum number of participants in each contest that is counted toward meeting the minimum-contests requirement. The following minimums are applicable: (Revised: 1/11/94 effective 9/1/94, 1/12/99, 1/25/02 effective 8/1/02, 10/31/02, 4/28/05 effective 8/1/05, 1/17/09 effective 8/1/09, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11, 1/18/14 effective 8/1/14, 7/31/15, 4/28/16 effective 8/1/16, 4/25/18 effective 8/1/18, 6/23/20 effective 8/1/20) Team Sports Minimum Contests Minimum Participants Individual Sports Minimum Contests Minimum Participants 9/14/22 401 Women's Acrobatics and Tumbling 6 18 Women's Bowling 8 5 Baseball 27 Cross Country 4 5 Basketball 25 Equestrian 6 12 Women's Beach Volleyball 8 Men's Fencing 9 5 Field Hockey 11 Women's Fencing 9 5 Football 9 Golf 8 5 Men's Ice Hockey 25 Men's Gymnastics 9 6 Women's Ice Hockey 20 Women's Gymnastics 9 5 Lacrosse 10 Rifle 8 4 Women's Rowing 6 23 Skiing 5 5 Women's Rugby 9 Swimming and Diving 6 11 Soccer 11 Tennis 12 5 Softball 27 Track and Field, Indoor 4 14 Volleyball 19 Track and Field, Outdoor 4 14 Men's Water Polo 15 Women's Triathlon 4 3 Women's Water Polo 10 Men's Wrestling 13 7 Women's Wrestling 13 7
Wow! My heart really goes out to this guy. This is a literal “what the f…” situation.
Rules are rules, but it should NOT affect the athlete when they were not the ones with the infraction.
Mind-blown.
Man, let him run. He’d run with more purpose than he ever has before and could put on a good showing! (That, and he probably just gained a bunch of fans who support his cause).
Seems like a bad idea to let him run… if they set that precedent schools won’t ever bother to run the amount or meets they are supposed to, they will just travel a couple hood kids to fast meets and then just take them… it will hurt the sport in the end… sucks for this kid though. What’s crazy is they actually only need 4 outdoor meets to be eligible so NCAA can’t make it much easier.

Agreed that with Indoor counting towards the 8, that its a very reasonable rule.
imo there should be repercussions for the head coach of the program (and potentially the school's athletic administration). It is their responsibility to oversee this rule, so NCAA shouldn't be taking it out on the athletes.

Well the school with lose a lot of money for not sponsoring track… a big budget school may not care but I think a school like psu losing like 40k for outdoor is a pretty big hit, and if they missed indoor sponsorship that’s another 40k… it could also be an admin issue not really a coaching issue depending on how it all played out but no matter what they suck!
Touhy must have jog that 10k at conference....I didn't see this coming (2) 1500 (1) 5k at regionals and do it again in 2 weeks....Austin, TX at night, it will be exciting.

The first round of the 1500 and the 5K at E regionals should be pretty easy but after that things get more interesting in both events.
