What if you have literally been at a school your whole life and there is not even enough to field a full team, you have no one to train with, but you don't want to upend your academic career to move for running to one of the powerhouse schools. What do you suggest then? there are schools that only have like 50 people per grade.

What if the students older than you helped train you, taught you how to become good. Don't you feel responsibility to help teach the younger runners who are in the spot you used to be?
I am saying there are not enough people on the team to even groom even though I have tried to recruit kids to the team for years. There are exceptions to these situations is the point rather than these blanket statements. I need to find someone to train with.
First, in this scenario the "main coach" has obviosly failed. If runners are looking elsewhere, he doesn't bring consistent results. If your advice about training and racing doesn't inspire confidence, hs runners and their parents will look around.
I retired from coaching after 20+years, but I write training and race plans for local hs runners who are hard working and talented, but have crappy coaches.
Not really "poaching" but it's certainly undermining. And I have no problem with it. Why should these kids be limited by the (usually teacher) "school" coach?
