He recently won the NCAA 100 and 200 meter dashes leading Florida to the NCAA title. It certainly looks like he would do very well moving up. However, I think I would save that for later years. He is still improving in the 200.

He is currently trash at the 400 (compared to world-beaters). His endurance and speed is best suited for the 200 I believe, he's worked on his start as well but hasn't maximised on it in champs due to race anxiety (his words). He should be able to get a 200 medal at some point. Although the 400 is weaker if you're talking about sneaking in for bronze, he'd still have to improve significantly to be that good at .
hes too thicc to run 400m
plus why should he move up?
since this guy decided to run for Liberia ( a country he has NEVER BEEN TO), he will always qualify for the olympics.
this ^
He's too big for the 400. I'm actually surprised he handles the curve of the 200 as well as he does. That said, I like him and he's a big talent. Too inconsistent, though.
Why would anyone want to run the 400 if they don't have to? He doesn't need that event at all.
NOOO
His best event would be a straight 200 meters without the curve, which is the original Olympic race.
His strength is his finishing speed, but that is only for the 200, he wouldn't be able to match it in the 400.
I enjoyed the replies to my question. However, you should consider that he ran cross country before he ever ran track & field. Joseph will run professionally for several years which might give him enough money to compete into his early 30s. He definitely could run a sub 43 second 400 by then!
He was literally 4th at worlds last year in the 200m last year. Why would he switch events. Should Grant Fisher move to the 800m?
he's heavier than ideal at all race distances
which is why training for the 400 would serve him well
on stride length alone he's one of my favorite runners to watch
his bounding drills must look absurd
No, but Grant Fisher should have stayed with the 1500/Mile. He moved up way too fast. That is common in our sport because it's hard to make money.
no, it’s like asking if fisher should move up to the marathon. which obviously he shouldn’t right now, but still.
it’s a genuine question. it’s hard for guys like joe to succeed in the 200. only other person with his type of build to succeed was bolt, and he was just a freak.
people here are saying he shouldn’t move up because he’s good at the 200. fair enough. but he could be even better at the 400. conventional wisdom and served TIME AND TIME AGAIN that guys with his physical attributes (tall, very long legs, great finishing speed) are VERY good at the 400.
“hEs TrAsH aT tHe 400 nOw”
yeah, and cole hocker can’t run 3:34 because he hasn’t done it yet. no sh*t he’s bad at the 400, he doesn’t train for it. wtf did you think was gonna happen? he ran 31.8 in the 300 (his words from his IG story) as a freshman in college. the potential is quite clearly there.
christian coleman should run the steeple, imagine him exploding off the water barrier
Should he run the 400?
Hell no.
I can't find anything consistent about his height, let alone anything about his weight, online, but my guess would be that he is physically better suited to the 400m than a guy like Elija Godwin, who is built more like a football player.
He's roughly the same size as Fred Kerley. What do you mean he's too big for the 400?
I agree. I am pretty sure Joseph Fanbulleh has run a couple of 4x400 in college, I wonder what his splits were
After thoughtfully thinking it through, several people agree with me in that he should move up to the 400 in the near future. Joe already runs the 200 the way you should run the 400!

Just because I can easily qualify to play minor league baseball is no reason not to switch positions so I can make it to the major leagues and dominate.
