The #1 400m runner in my age group maintains a cadence of about 240 in the 400m. He's maybe an inch taller than me.
My current 400m cadence is 205... maybe even slower. I haven't checked recently. I'd like to race the 400 at a cadence closer to 240.
For high school and open runners, sprint cadence comes naturally. But with age, the ability for muscles to fire really fast drops off.
I haven't seen much on drills for increasing cadence for older sprinters. Mostly, I read that you should ignore cadence. However, some top open 400m runners approach 300 steps per minute. I can't even jog in place at 300 cadence for more than a few seconds.
If you watch the masters races in Torun going on right now, you'll notice that in the older age groups, the runner with the highest turnover on the last lap usually wins the race if he can maintain the cadence to the finish.
I think that to increase my cadence I need to train the CNS to fire faster and hold that cadence longer.
I haven't seen anything on training the CNS for faster cadence. Any thoughts on the optimal way to do that?
