after hearing about the event for years and seeing the 2 mile times that guys run I've decided to see it for myself. I busted open the piggy bank and bought a plane ticket...
why is it so special and does anyone know who, of note , will be there?
I’d guess almost every distance runner in the West who is top 50 or so in the country will be there along with about a quarter of those from the rest of the country.
Last year 12 of the top 25 3200 runners (by season best time) had their season best time at Arcadia.
yep, can always expect the top CA guys, so the Youngs, Chris Caudillo, Emmanuel Perez, Carter Spradling, Grant Morgenfeld, Matthew Donis etc., hopefully a few top guys from neighboring states/west coast states as well, so Gorze, Zack Munson, Weston Brown etc.,
Plus as you say a few top kids usually fly in. Last year Connor Burns & Rocky Hansen both flew in and ran really quick times.
The rules of the meet are that entrants need to be affiliated with their high school team, and entries need to be submitted by their high school coach. Consequently, don’t expect to see the Young twins there, nor Ellie Shea, etc.
Oh, it is worth it. Best meet on the west coast, certainly one of the best in the country. I think last year guys started breaking 9 in a few of the seeded heats - not even in the invitational heat. This year I wouldn't be shocked to see someone go under 9 in the day meet. How often do you see that? Easily the fastest 3200 races in the country.
As pointed out by some other posters some stars will be missing but many, many, others fly in. You wont regret flying in to watch. This year especially will be incredible and i'm actually pretty sad I won't be able to go this year. Last year was worth every penny.
Not to pry, but you've been hearing about the meet for "years" and now you're flying out just to "see it for yourself?" Do you have an athlete that you coach or a child in the race? Are you affiliated with some kind of media outlet that covers the race? Who is buying plane tickets to fly across the country to watch high schoolers run a race?
200,000 fans just flew cross country to watch college hoops, and we're worried about 1 guy flying to a track meet.
There's a difference between college sports, which is primarily played by adults, and high school events, in which the majority of athletes are minors.
People are also fans of college sports teams based on where they grew up, where they went to school, and where they live.
There's a reason why if you told your friends and family over dinner one night that you're going to the NCAA basketball tournament, they would say, "Whoa, that seems like a great time!" Versus if you told them you were booking a flight to watch the greatest number of teenagers sub-9:00 2-miles ever, they would think that's confusing and creepy.
The middle ground of these two scenarios would be someone flying across the country to watch the Little League World Series. That's creepy if your kid is not in it. It's not creepy if he is.
The site is not that impressive and it's tough to get to, park, etc. But once the sun goes down and the lights go on, game on. Jaw-dropping performances across the board. Would be fun to go back some day. Enjoy.

"Watching high schoolers run on a track = borderline pervert. I just watch them online, which is totally normal."
