I've had a pretty decent track season thus far, pretty much PRing in every race from beginning to now with the exception of 1 tactical rustbuster after 2 weeks of not racing. Here's my progression:
800 - 1) 2:01 4x8 relay first leg with splits of 59-62 fresh 2) 2:02.low with splits of 60-62, 1hr after 1500 3. 2:00.high with splits of 59.low-61.mid, 1hr after 1500
1500 - 1) 4:39 mile 1 hr after the 4x8, slow first 3 laps kicked in 64. Both races off of no track workouts, just tempos and hills. 2) 4:16.mid even pace the whole time 3) 4:08.high even pace then closed in 61.mid
5000 - 1. 15:36.low with very slow first 2 laps (78,76) followed by mostly even pace (5:01 through the first mile, 10:00 through 2 miles and 15:01 at 3 miles) 2. 15:27.high, 4:54 first mile followed by even paced 75s, 14:56 at 3 miles. Both races were done fresh and in good conditions (cool nighttime, good competition, no wind).
I never considered myself much of a speedy guy but it has been a pretty fun challenge trying to break 2 off of distance oriented training - I'm sure it has helped my 1500 times come down. Still, I know I won't be competitive enough to actually focus on it with my 400m speed (if I had to guess, likely no better than 54). With conference approaching in about 4 weeks, I soon have to decide which event I want to focus on, since doubling is going to be difficult with multiple rounds of the 1500 to contend with; I'm probably not good enough to qualify for two events in the same day. I'll be racing a 3k this coming week, and it'll be my first 3k of the season. Admittedly, I think I could have run better in both of my 5ks had I raced a few 3ks prior rather than just racing 1500s and 800s, but that doesn't matter anymore.
Given my PRs, can I expect to break 9:00 doubling after a 1500? I care more about hitting a good PR in that, preferably 4:04 or better to get within striking distance of my goal time of sub 4. If I do run like an 8:55, that would definitely give me confidence to lean more towards the 5000. For conference, I'm not sure if it'll be tactical but I want to be able to hit at least the juco state B standards for the 15 and the 5. My coach told me that I have a better chance in the 5 than the 15 even though I might be competent at both. For reference, the A and B standards are as follows:
A - 4 flat, 15:17. B - 4:01, 15:25
Training info: Was averaging 70mpw during base training and early season. Now it's more like 50-60, 50 when I had to take days off due to injuries. Recovery runs are 8 miles at like 7:30 pace and long runs are 90 minutes at whatever pace, sometimes I do 30 minutes easy on Sundays. Have not doubled but I am meaning to start adding 30 minutes 2x this week. Typical workouts are 16 x 400 w/ 60s recovery averaging 68-70 depending on the day, feeling good enough to do 4 more if I had to, 3 x 1 mi w/ 3 min recovery averaging 4:53, 12 x 300 w/ 60s recovery averaging 48.
Thanks for going through the trouble to read everything, I know I typed a lot.
