Congratulations on the Olympic Trials qualifier! I remember once upon a time thinking that, somehow, if I “was able to go pro,” I would hang it up around age 33 as the risks and diminishing returns outweigh the investment at that point.
As it was, and my answer to this thread is, take it as far as you can in high school, then, if you can go next level, by all means do it. If, having enjoyed a competitive and rewarding collegiate career with a hunger for more, continue on with an OT qualifier as the goal. Most of us will never get beyond that in the sport, and that’s a good time to stop and reassess.
For me, that happened to be age 25, while I was in grad school, and that seemed to be a good time to hang it up and move on, so to speak. I had always had nagging injuries with higher mileage anyway, and I, too, got tired of being an ectomorph, so I pursued full body fitness in the ensuing years. I have zero regrets.
If people still have major goals in their 30s, by all means, go for it, but there’s also no reason ex-competitive runners can’t put some muscle on their frames and still run to stay in shape and be semi-competitive at local races. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Plus it opens you up for so many other sports and hobbies.
