One of these guys needs to take down Rudy Chapa’s 28:32 High School 10k Record!!! In the right race it can be done. There’s a couple of others who might come close, but these guys have to endurance and talent to make it happen. I really hope they have this as one of their target goals this year (?) That record was set in a mixed ability race 45 years ago and Japan has a few HS’s now who I think have broken it!!!
I don’t know about Lex, but I asked Leo about the 10k when he ran the 1500 at The TEN meet a few weeks ago and he said breaking the 10k record wasn't a goal of his.
Leo seems in good enough shape right now to get close to the 10k record. Maybe he will change his mind.
They are tying their ultimate legacy to pr's and records, so that they aren't recognizing that their legacy in the most lasting sense lies in being part of the greatest high school xc and distance track teams ever assembled, and adding to those credentials in senior track is part of that, though nationally, no one cares too much about their casting aside California state champs.
Definitely won’t get it, even with shoes. The 5k and 10k records are really tough. Nico was probably a touch better than his brothers and couldn’t manage the 5k record. One of the twins ran 14:00 behind Gorze a few weeks ago. 28:45 seems about right for them right now.
by the time they are sophomores in college I imagine 27:30-28:00 is a safe estimate
And on day two Leo ran 1:51.15 taking 8th in the first heat. Three UCLA guys ahead of him at 1:50, including McMahon-Staggs who also doubled back from last night’s 1500.
Impressive stuff.
with this 800 and his 1500 from sound running entered into statgangsta, the website puts his fitness at:
51.96 for 400m
3:58.41 for 1 mile
7:49.57 for 3k
8:26.73 for 2 miles
13:37.24 for 5k
28:49.65 for 10k
really puts into perspective just how strong that 10k record is. I honestly don't think they will get it, even if they do go for it.
Was the Rafer Johnson meet ran at the same time as the Larsen Classic? I saw Senzo Sokhela, a multiple NAIA champion (3:43, 1:48) run the mile at Rafer in 4:26, with a bunch of DNS guys? Thanks
“You don’t seem to appreciate how incredible that record is. Do you think Rupp considered it?“

No argument there my friend! I thought that Chapa did it in 78, not 76? But either way - it’s time for it to Go! It’s going to be incredibly hard - if he can take the 5k record down even slightly - he’s got a realistic chance own them both! Not criticizing mixed level or ability races either; whatever gets the job done. He’s going to have alter his training though this more distance and less speed work. Chapa wasn’t as fast as they both are now, but had a greater Winter distance base from which he drew from when hanging with the big guys in that race.

But why do you think either of them are in 13:38 5k shape (i.e., 7:49 3k fitness of a 77.7 VDOT) required to lower the 5k record, let alone approach the extension of that fitness out to 10k?
Look at Chapa’s 2mile times of that era. Yeah, Brosnan wasn’t coaching Chapa. My limited understanding is that Chapa ran big mileage.
To recognize and appreciate Oregon’s rich athletic history. Our goal is for this legacy to inspire participation in sport and foster awareness of the values and life-long rewards gained from this participation.

What ? Nico was not even close to them on the track. He was a really good XC runner but on the track they’re way better.
Lex ran 13:43 second of all time on his one and only try at the 5k as a junior. Leo ran a 3:40 1500m in March just after placing 16th at world XC.
They didn’t have the best XC season but give them time and you’re going to see. If they’re healthy and if Lex can regain his shape I see them both running well under the 5k record, Lex might dip under 4 as well and Leo will be at 3:55/3:37. Nico never proved he was on that level.
I think they can both definitely take down 13:37. Lex was only 5 seconds off a year ago, and Leo might be better. I'm glad they're skipping CIF. Literally no one cares about winning a state title in HS, but people remember fast times and records. No one says "Fernandez was such a good runner he got 2 state titles his senior year" they talk about how crazy a 4:00/8:35 double is. As long as they hit a few races with other top HSers, I'm happy.

I’m not sure that Nico was better than Leo in high school tbh. I know Nico won NXN but Leo was 16th at World Junior XC and ran 3:40. I think Nico and Lex were probably pretty equal in terms of high school ability and Leo is a bit ahead of both
