Our high school has consistently been one of the best schools in the Northwest US in cross country and distance track and field. We've produced multiple runners that have gone on to run collegiately.
Recently, our track coach retired, and someone else has taken up the Head Coach position, and also is in charge of the distance coaching position (1500m + 3000m).
A week into the new coaching program, it seems as if the highest mileage we'll run per week is going to be 20 mpw this whole season, with a focus on speedwork and sprinting mechanics. The team has generally run anywhere from 40-65 mpw before the coaching change, so this has come to a shock to most of us.
We've tried communicating our concerns with the coaches, but they seem pretty adamant about their program.
Is this really as detrimental to our fitness as we think? Will we be able to succeed with this training program? If not, what could we do in our situation?
