Damn hotel prices are expensive. How are folks paying $500+ a night? Went to Maui a few years back and rates were like $100-$200.
You will not get a hotel on Maui for $100-$200 either. A resort is more like $900 a night and that cheap place with all the meth addicts is over $300.
Overall, I’d call Kauai less worth visiting than Maui, unless you’re really old. But look at VRBO instead and stay in a condo. You can find a $200 a night place easily, though with the booking and cleaning fees, you really need to stay a week. Princeville is a reasonably priced place to stay, especially if you like golf.
A few years back was before the big inflation of the last year or so. Reset your expectations. IIRC, Kauai is less awesome if you want to hang on the beach, but is good if you want to see super rainy spots.

Wrong! Maui also has super rainy spots. They’re just not in the touristy areas. Kauai is better if you want to sit inside all day because your vacation was ruined by rain.
I stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in Kauai that was nice. Great time hiking 8 hours in the bamboo forest. Just wish I hadn't have done that the day before The Great Aloha Run. Lady on the bus saw my third place trophy and tells me "Better luck next time ".

Winning a race on Kauai is like winning a Turkey trot anywhere else. I’m slow AF on the mainland. Here, I’m sub-elite.
The Hapalua Half (Oahu) does a chase where the elite locals start first and then the Kenyans try to catch them. It’s pretty funny to watch.

Much not know much about Hawaii and The Great Aloha Run. I flew back to Honolulu the night before the race. 34,000 running that year. I think I could have won it on fresh legs.
