I admire Galen for wanting to put a brave face on it and stay optimistic. That is part of his success and resilience. However Galen is FINISHED in the sense of ever being the elite runner he was. It will never happen even with the super shoes. Galen no longer has the ability to break 4, 13:30, 28 or 2:08. Even with the super shoes those days are behind him. Reality is a tough pill to swallow but it might be easier if it comes in the binders of a mailed book.
What's with all the negative nancys here saying Rupp is done? Are we forgetting that he ran 2:06 just a year and a half ago? And that was on a very limited buildup after the Olympics. If he can string together a solid year or two of training I would not be at all surprised to see him break the AR for the marathon. Let's not forget that Cam Levins, who is less talented than Rupp in my opinion, was many years removed from elite level performances but then came back to run 2:07 and 2:05 after staying healthy for a couple of years.
I agree he has a 2:05 in him but he will definitely run it ironically. With Alanis Morissette in the lead car mic in hand, with Galen wearing a Ryan Hall mask and a muscle suit. It's coming.
Objectively, G R is at the 50K stage of life. A great opportunity to set a 5OK personal best. Please note: It does not matter how fast other runners have run 1/2 Marathon & Marathon past age 35. We are addressing one runner. We are not having a debate if humans can achieve Marathon p.b. at age 36 or 37.

Galen could wake up tomorrow and run a 28 min tempo in training.

Yeah well you can believe in fairy tales and I shall stick to facts.
He's not in top shape for the half this weekend but he's still dreaming big.

He said he has been pain-free for two months — “a huge blessing” — but his training load hasn’t been close to normal going into Sunday’s 13.1-mile race. “I’m not expecting to be in top shape,” he said. “But I am hoping to be competitive here in the half coming up and keep building from here.”
I’m by no means a Rupp fan but he definitely has been better than his PR for awhile now. He’s ran better in championship style races and not quite as well in time trials with elite runners. Even if he never gets to that level again he is still the top American marathon runner currently and I think still better than Cam.

The same gets said of every Newbury Park runner, all their parents, coaches, and even the janitor. In actuality, none of them ever have. Rupp could if he simply bothered to time his warmup? Well, he won't. In the meantime, he theoritically has every AR from 10k up. He literally has none. No records are kept for what Rupp has conceptually done. This Board continually gives him credit for what he 'could' do.

I give him credit only for what he has done, like everyone else.
