Only 16 women make nationals in the 3000. How many of the 300 teams had women in the race? How many had teammates? Track meets are a bunch or few individuals who get their scores compiled.
I was being sarcastic, obviously every coach goes for the top high school runners (even though it's risky). I've yet to hear a coach on signing day say "we deliberately passed on all the FL/nxn girls in order to sign milesplit's #203. She's undertrained, has surprising 200/400 speed and her arm carry and stride clearly show she will be the best college runner."

The Emerging Elite program somewhat has historically had the reputation in MA of burning kids out. Not necessarily by high mileage, but over racing?...
Plus some element of disdain for the program arises from local (school) coaches b/c its a year-round actual team, so members are generally precluded from being on, and in turn, contributing the school team. Yes, there are some success stories for the program, but also there is some hypothetical/idealized value in team approach for the majority of kids.
