Amaris did the same. Did it ever occur to you that people might not want to live in Durham or wherever the heck Virginia is.
You do realize that Raleigh, where NC State is and Amaris transferred to, and Durham are only about 20-25 miles apart. Raleigh is a nicer city than Durham but it's doubtful that was the deciding factor.
I posted about this in the Valby thread. I can guarantee you he didn’t reach out directly, but he may have spoken to someone to reach out to her.
Just because he didn't reach out directly doesn't make it ok. It was known since world juniors that Barnett wasn't happy at UVA, but she didn't hit the portal in the fall. Yet an earlier poster mentions she was home for Christmas and things happened quickly. She went into the portal after Christmas. I'm sure Brosnan himself didn't contact her but having someone else ask: "you unhappy and want to leave?" isn't cool either. Saying Frias talked with girls on the team and decided on UCLA - that's fine as long as they weren't told to talk to her. Are you ever going to prove it? Of course not, who is going to go ask these individuals if that's what happened - and they're not going to admit it anyway. It's meddling for sure and you don't want to be a coach with that reputation. The coaching world is small and it has a long memory. Just because you don't get in trouble for breaking a rule with the NCAA doesn't mean there aren't consequences from these kinds of actions.

Let me emphasize - they committed WITHIN A DAY of being on the portal. Do you really think the only conversations they had with the coaches happened in that 24 hour window? That's basically enough time to answer an email.
Sorry, I also want to add that christmas is before the date she went on the portal so if she was visiting campus during that time that is extremely questionable.
I think the 3 girls all probably wanted to go to UCLA/USC, but there was no money or academic boost available during their recruitment. Now there is! It's an easy sell to get them home.
I'm joking about USC, but if they hired a known distance coach and gave him 5 scholarships, the same thing could happen.
Is this because USC has the best neighborhoods to run in around the campus?
These girls go through trauma at their schools and people defend the big money in the suits. They just want to move on but they get vilified all a part of the Duke culture.
I don't disagree with you - it's completely sketch and my opinion is what has happened hasn't followed the letter of the law. The problem is you aren't going to prove it. Neither girl is going to say what really happened and I'm sure the people he sent as his messenger/negotiator aren't going to rat him out either. To be fair - it's not just him that operate this way and like I said before: coaches talk and you don't want to be that guy, especially when one day you're going to need a favor for a meet entry, etc. You aren't going to get it if you're the one who's poaching athletes.
To be honest it's incredibly stupid to do it with Barnett because you've now messed with Vin. People have lots of opinions on Vin, but he's still Vin and he carries a lot of weight/power. He isn't someone whose bad side you'd want to be on.
I suspect Brosnan is figuring out that the hardest part of college coaching IS the recruiting side so he's using what he knows/has at his disposal vs going into the grind.
Behind every sudden decision is a deeper underlying issue. Yet, you guys trash these girls who at least tried to make a move thousands of miles away. I’ve seen people punished for years for leaving Duke. Why are you defending this corrupt establishment?

Finally somebody understands what I'm saying.
Like NIL, the transfer portal still has a lot of gray area. There is even an option in the portal to say that you don't want to be contacted by other schools...which implies you already know where you are going.
You can probably get verbal commitment on some things, but a parent will want to see - an admission letter, - a financial award detailing tuition, room, board w/ final cost to student, and - academic credit transfer before completing the deal.
This all doesn't happen in 24 hours, but it can be pretty quick.
