Anyone have a chance this year? In the next several years?
Owen Powell in WA—son of now legendary miler coach (I think he gets that title now) Andy Powell—is a sophomore. He dropped from 4:40 to 4:17 in the 1600 last year. There’s still a big jump to sub 4 but one would think his household can spread some of that sub 4 magic to him.
Speaking of WA, Vince Recupero is also a sophomore and set the 14 year old world record in the 2-mile last year (late summer bday; he’s young for his grade). Ran a 4:07 1600 last year. Was injured in cross this fall.
Of note: both are entered in the mile at the UW HS Invite at Dempsey this Sunday.
Josiah Tostenson of OR set the National middle school record as an 8th grader and ran a 4:09 last year as a freshman.
I wouldn’t predict any of these three would do it this year but they are are huge talents I couldn’t rule out. Anyone else to watch—whether this year or in the next several years?
