I'm a 40 something year old looking to run under 18:00 for a 5k. What shoe will offer the most chance for dropping time at this distance.

Vaporfly Next%.
The End.
Or the Alphafly.
If you want a slightly cheaper option than the Nike cheater shoes, the Adidas Adizero Pro or Takumi Sen 8 are just as good and can usually be found for a bit less.
Alphafly is too bulky and cushioned for a 5K IMO. Vaporfly is more responsive. I also like the Streakfly for 5K.
Or Asics MetaSpeed Sky.
no they are not
nope
the only correct answer
At 60, I’m a different (younger?) runner with the Vaporfly. It’s not cheating if everyone’s doing it, right?
First version
I prefer the flat road shoes like the Mizuno Eikenden instead of the big bouncy shoes. I want to feel the road but it is getting harder and harder to find those.
Anyone have a suggestion for racing flats?
For some reason, no other shoe brand can catch up on Nikes Vaporflies, they are still the best and the extra edge you need.
Sortiemagic RP6.
New Balance SC Pacer, or go old school with Saucony Type A or Fastwitch
Skechers Speed Elite Hyper or Adidas Takumi Sen 8/9.
Any other option is likely too much stack for 5K, imho.
I brought both the Vaporfly Next and Streakfly to my last race, a 5k on new year’s eve. Did a bit of running + strides in both shoes and settled on the Vaporfly, and it proved to be the better choice for me. It’s just an incredibly good shoe for almost any distance. The Streakfly has its merits too, as it’a wonderful shoe for workouts even if not the most responsive model.
Adizero Pro?
The Takumi Sen is definitely as good as the Vaporfly Next% for 5k racing. It might even be better. It's also cheaper, so it's kind of a no brainer.
If you are a forefoot striker and don’t like the higher ramp, Alphafly V1 can work great. The Alpha is IMO more comfortable shoe than Vaporfly and the pop from the air pod is great.
I’m 58 now and used to race all in Vaporfly, but my legs feel better after racing in the Alpha. If you’re still young, I would agree Vaporfly is still the best.
