Photos (not released) from U2 flybys allegedly show antenna arrays consistent with a radio signals intelligence collection mission.
Balloon was originally detected (at least) over the Bering Straits west of Alaska and implication that it was not shot down then because recovery for counter intelligence purposes would be difficult in the Bering Strait.
Back link allegedly was shutdown when the Chinese learned US was tracking the balloon. Not stated when this happened or where the balloon was on it's flight path. Unstated implication is that Chinese were no longer receiving intelligence from or controlling the balloon after that point.
There are plenty of pictures of the balloon envelope being recovered, but recovery of the payload has not been publicly acknowledged. There a good chance it won't be acknowledged whether they did find it or not.

one of the major questions is if the US jammed transmissions from the balloon or if it was able to transmit...whatever intel it was collecting while it crossed the nation.
Has anyone made a realistic guess at what a balloon could do vs a satellite or public information? I mean was there anything valuable it *could* have been collecting?
Seems to be that it is also testing US responses...much of what we've been calling 'UFOs" are no doubt chinese spy balloons, off the CA coast near naval aviation and the like. Testing what we can detect and looking for patterns to understand.

I guess to answer my question, it was listening in on US military broadcasts, per your information. Like our spyplanes do off the Chinese coast.

I thought I saw a report that the balloon data link was shutdown (by the Chinese) at some point, so there wouldn't be anything to jam. I can't locate whatever article that might have come from at the moment else I'd link it.
If I haven't misremembered this tidbit, the Chinese might have done this so as not to reveal the path through which they're sending back data.

from wikipedia, suggests the US did jam the beast. The entry has footnotes to the underlying article but I did not follow them.
The balloon was monitored by crewed aircraft deployed by NORAD, including a Boeing E-3 Sentry Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS), a Boeing RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft from Nellis Air Force Base,[57] and an F-22 Raptor from Langley Air Force Base.[67] The U.S. Department of Defense said that, during the balloon's overflight of the United States, it had blocked the balloon from gathering intelligence and was able to study the balloon and its equipment.[49][68] A U.S. government official said that at least two U-2S reconnaissance aircraft were used to gather data on the balloon while it was over the midwestern United States, though it was not clear at which points in the balloon's flight it was tracked by U-2S aircraft.[33] The War Zone commented that the U-2S's high flight ceiling exceeding 70,000 feet (21,000 m) allowed it to observe the balloon from within relatively close proximity (including from above), and its electronic warfare suite allowed the aircraft to jam or monitor radio emissions from the balloon, including data transmissions directed upwards towards Chinese communications satellites.[33]

Saying Wikipedia says is nearly like saying C.I.A. says. You do know, C.I.A. have significant editing authority on Wikipedia.
How is EVERYBODY so sure it is a "Chinese" "spy" balloon. The thing looks pretty freaking obvious to be a "spy" balloon. Isn't a more likely explanation that it is some research scientist's balloon or possibly a resource company balloon doing lidar scans or even if it is a 'spy balloon' why is it China's?
The U.S. has its own secret high-in-the-sky spy balloon program.
Why bother spending billions on satellites then? Have balloons suddenly become controllable? Can the Chinese direct their super obvious spy balloons over sites of interest? Don’t balloons simply blow wherever the wind takes them? The Chinese must be about 1000 years ahead of the US at weather forecasting to know exactly when and where in China to release these aimless monstrosity so that they float over the desired military targets in the US several WEEKS later. We better watch out. if China can now direct these low cost, giant spy balloons then there’s no reason why they can’t load them up with nukes and take out every key target in America in one fell swoop. 😂 The new modern warfare… giant weather balloons.
The answer to all my questions of course is that you are all idiots. I mean real morons. You will believe any nonsensical story floated to support your idiotic bias. One can only hope that in your non-LRC lives you’re not included in any important decision making.
