Important to mention he was a discretionary pick over Jackson Sharp from Wisconsin who raced the trials and came 6th whilst Ky didn't race the trials and returned to the US to run indoors.
The selection of Robinson was somewhat validated by his World Cross performance, despite this, the non selection of Sharp was foolish. The lack of a rigorous selection process is short sighted. Sharp and Caldwell will be the poster athletes for Australian running, and the selectors will find a way to claim credit.
In what way was the selection process not rigorous? Jackson Sharp placed 6th in the trials, and to my knowledge, the only athlete that nominated for selection without running the trial was Ky, so Ky was selected instead of Jackson Sharp. To all available evidence, Ky was the better pick given he had placed higher than Jackson at NCAA XC. There was no reason to pick Jackson over the 4th and 5th place getters at the trials, Rorey Hunter and Andy Buchanan, considering Andy had more cross country success than Jackson, they both placed higher than him in the trials and had equivalent or better outdoor track results.
Obviously Jackson has showed that he is now a star of Australian distance running, and it is easy to say in hindsight that he should have been pick, but given all knowledge that was available to the public, the selectors made an appropriate decision in picking the top 6 Australian athletes.
