According to tfrrs.org there are 46 D1’s and a couple of D2’s as of 1/30. I’m going with 60 by the end of indoors.

Back in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, there were 30-35 sub-4s and an equal 50 sub-8 3k's, but the quality in both mile and 3k is far better this year. In one of those years, there was one 3k under 7:48.5, and one mile under 3:55 (3:52). In 2017, 30 sub-4, ten of them being conversions from altitude and/or a flat track, and while Cheserek ran 3:52, 2nd best was 3:55.60 and six out of the top ten were altitude converted. 3:58.53 was 16th (usually the last qualifier, I think). The same year, in the 3k, there were 36 sub-8, only 5 sub 7:50, with a best of 7:45. There were only three sub-13:40s, with Cheserek leading at 13:32.
In 2016, in the mile, Yorks and McGorty ran high 3:53 at UW, third was 3:56, Bartelsmeyer was sixteenth at 3:58.22, and 35 broke 4. Cheserek led the 3k with 7:40. 2nd place was 7:48, and Woody was the last sub 7:50 in sixth in 7:48.89. 50 broke 8. There were 5 sub 13:40s in the 5000m, with Cheserek leading in 13:35.86, and only 42 sub 14. BU features in a lot of the mile and 5000m results in that year but not as many of the other results in 2016-17. There were pretty many UW results and Iowa State also got a bunch.
Compare to now, with over a month to go in the season. Top mile is 3:51.9. 5 are sub 3:55. 16th is 3:57.45. 46 sub 4. There are nine sub 7:45 3k's, with 7:36 first. There are 12 sub 7:50s. There are 50 sub 8s. In the 5000m, there are three 13:11s, 9 sub-13:20, 13 sub-13:27, Cheserek's leading time in 2016 would be 25th. 13:57 is 50th. All 50 of the top 50 were run at BU!
I could see more than that in the next two weeks. There's some teams that haven't really let their runners compete yet. I think just between NAU, Virginia Tech, and UVA we could get close to 60. maybe 8-10 sub 4s from those teams. first two weeks of February always deliver fast distance times before conferences.
Between the BU fast track and everyone wearing rocket launchers on their feet, the sky's the limit. The shoes are making comparisons to the past laughable. High school, college, pros, everyone flying around the track.
90 DI guys ran under 4 min last year.
Breaking 4 minutes is not a big deal. It was done in 1954. Why are we still referring to it a some magic number, it is not.
