Curious to see what you all think. 8 guys under 4min is absolutely insane. Given UW's great location and very decent academics, they should be a great running school
That’s why you can’t keep glorifying these “popular” coaches that got on the early flotrack videos and that gave them this clout for no reason. Yes, has had some success especially with women, but stop making these guys like metcalf out to be more than a decent coach who landed a sweet deal.
Metcalf isn't all bad. He gave me a running radio headset at running camp when I answered a trivia question correctly. But he did besmirch the good name of a running legend who had gone to my high school by suggesting he ate too much, so in the end, it foreshadowed what was a big contributing factor to his dismissal.
If you're reading this, Greg, keep those finger calipers to yourself from now on.
Having had plenty of opportunities to observe Greg from arm's length, I see him as charismatic and Machiavellian but completely unable to coach x's and o's by temperament. I have watched this program stagnate for many decades under mediocre oversight when they should have contended with Oregon and Stanford every inch of the way. I knew from having met Andy and talked with some of his athletes that he was effectively the "Anti-Greg" and that finally the potential for UW to properly flourish had arrived.
I seem to remember that in fact, even before UW, that Powell had coached more sub-4 collegians than any other coach in history. Can anyone confirm or deny?
To add more to my Earlier post and paint a clearer picture based on what you’re saying. His charisma is what landed his success. That made his a great RECRUITER. Recruiting lands the talent then you just don’t screw it up too much then you can pop off and win something even if they’re at 80-90%. But what Andy is doing is actual COACHING. Oregon had distance studs for sure, but they were a well rounded track team so Andy wasn’t just blowing scholarships on a ton of talent. He had to do some developing but sure they got some very good talent while he was there.
Metcalf was simply a good talker/recruiter but couldn’t (effectively and consistently) develop talent enough to have that success that he should have based on the recruits he was landing. You have to know how to give and take as a coach, when to push when to back off when to simply be a support system for your athletes
NO. They just got embarrassed at NCAA XC with a 14th place finish. They weren't even the top team from Washington (Gonzaga finished 13th).
Having good milers but being unable to get them placing well in cross country hurts his reputation as a coach. Most of the team are transfers or 5th/6th/7th years (or both).
Will be interesting to see how Andy does with the younger group of guys he has coming once the UW gets past Fay, Lumb, Ellis & the rest of the grad transfers. He's proven that he can develop guys like Waskom, Houser & Green. Daschbach has had problems staying healthy, but overall, I'll take Powell any day over Metcalf. Metcalf was charming, and could recruit, but as an X & Os coach, Andy has him beat. Andy isn't as high strung compared to Greg, and I think Greg's personality may have rubbed off the wrong way on some of the guys he brought in.
Odd thread. I don't think much of anyone ever thought or claimed that Metcalf is a better coach than Powell. And I say this as a person that plugged my nose and rolled my eyes at all of the Oregon success under Powell.
Didn’t Izaac Yorks break the collegiate record in a sick Dempsey race against McGorty?
8 is awesome, the transfer portal and extra Covid years helped boost that number.
They are both great coaches. I think people forget that they ncaa is a game. The actual training is a piece of the puzzle. The other part is recruiting, managing the beast.

Impressive results in the mile but losing to in state rival Gonzaga, who is just smaller, cancels out the mile results. They should not be losing to Gonzaga EVER.
Both are over relied in distance to carry the load for the whole team and not really producing strong results at the conference or national championship level. Having 8 guys in the mile is not going to win a national championship. Where is the depth on sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws? UW also used to be the premier landing spot for Pole Vaulting, which has since fallen off.
While you're right that the UW relies on the distances to carry the load, the Huskies are slowly reclaiming their place as Pole Vault U under Toby Stevenson. Grad student Jacob Englar is #10 on the men's side. Sarah Borton & Nastassja Campbell are currently tied for #7 on the women's side, even though they both got beat last Saturday by high schoolers Hana (world U20 champ) & Amanda Moll (national HS record holder & first HS'er over 15 feet), who will be attending the UW this fall. Elijah Mason has scored in the discus at the last two NCAAs, and Jayden White scored indoors in the weight.

That is awesome they are getting Moll. Can't ever see any great sprinters or hurdlers with the weather though.
