I'm told that because track times are pretty self-explanatory, coaches rarely watch the recruiting video(s) athletes send them. I'm talking about distance runners, not, e.g., hurdlers. So college coaches: do you watch them?

I’m good friends with a coach at a pretty well-known program. He virtually only looks at times and grades/test scores (for their academic index), and he’ll only look at a video if it’s impressive (e.g. running a 1:50 4x800 split by negative splitting, running a great time in 15 mph wind and 85 degree weather, tripping and still running a 4:10 mile, etc).
In track, the times speak for themselves, and you need your athletes to be smart enough so they can have high GPAs to offset the football team.
Thanks for your response! But how does he know if the person was running in high wind or tripped if he doesn't watch the video? I'm just wondering if it's worth it to even send a video when emailing coaches with stats.
They’d likely include it. Here’s a hypothetical example of a great recruit:
”hi Coach, I’m a prospective runner interested in your college…I’ve run a sub 4 …(if it’s good) my GPA is 4.0 and SAT is 1600…I’ve also run a 1:50 800 and ran a 8:50 3200 despite being tripped in the 1st lap, video is below…
thanks,
name”
