I don’t. I find it hilarious when people run extra to hit an arbitrary number like 5.00 miles. I’ll run 4.57 or 5.11 doesn’t matter to me. Just run for time or never look at the distance on your watch
I don't think I've had this issue before because I simply do not run too much. I see some guys that are not pros running 120-150 a week on Strava. I feel like running that much may indeed interfere with race times and your mental health if you have a job, spouse, or any kind of life.
I've had periods where I've been obsessed with hitting mileage goals. I'm coming back from an injury now and I've changed my attitude to focus on time. Instead of warming up for 2 miles, I run for 15 minutes and don't worry about the distance. Same for easy runs and the long run, it's all on time now. It's weirdly liberating. I only bother with distance for reps
