I think that the OP is looking for current runners.
Scott Fry definitely was not underrated. He has a long list of accomplishments and was recognized for them.
What about Bob Henes of Woodridge or John Sence of Milford?

Jerry and James Xu from Mason
Jerry didn’t have a great ending to XC but is healthy again
James is a sophomore but had a good track time so far this winter and will help the team reload next year
Also Wes Taylor from Lancaster. He ran the nxr meet and almost scored for them. That was also his only race of the season
I feel like I’ve heard about jerry Xu more than a lot of guys and some that are faster
