Ok, the story I heard from Bootsy Collins, the bassist in his band, was that while performing a song on stage would turn his back to the audience and dance down the length of the stage facing his musicians when someone screwed up and he would hold up how many fingers to whoever had screwed up, indicating how many hundreds of dollars he was docking that person for screwing up. They knew the gig, and they knew what it meant. And they knew working for James Brown was notoriously nutso.
