Ritz gives a 69.5 400 split and says the final time is 4:26.0 - so 65.5/4:05/8:11 average pace for the last 1200, at altitude. I don’t know if she can run 8:20, but 8:25 seems feasible.
Karissa Schweizer is currently the AR holder indoors at 8:25.70, which is #7 all time behind 6 Ethiopians. If hypothetically Monson ran 8:20i, that would put her #2 all time behind only Genzebe.
If she ran 8:20.00 outdoors that would make her #8 all time - but 4 of the 7 women under 8:20 are Chinese from September 12-13 1993, and one is Francine Niyonsaba. The “non Chinese” outdoor 3k record is Hassan’s 8:18.49. Klosterhalfen clocked 8:20.07 behind Hassan in that race in 2019.
I hope to see Monson make an all out attempt on Schweizer’s AR at Millrose, and it looks like that might be the game plan.
It may be that the "8:20" pep talk is Ritz saying "You are ready to beat Klosterhalfen". It should be quite a race, since they tend to run similar race styles.
Good stuff. Yet another underrated flick for good chuckles. Dont tell me marky mark aint a good actor--that look on his face when he meets Will's wife.
BTW, another great video to show your athletes that puts to bed their fears of being a mild to moderate heel striker. Purrier and Monsooon are doing pretty well.
Note that TWICE during the trial, Ritz told her she was ready for sub-8:20. Also mentioned Koko twice. Interesting programming strategy.
interesting observation - if you imagine yourself as Alicia during that TT, the positive reinforcements from Ritz are so many and so frequent that it doesn't even allow you time to have any negative thoughts. If you're listening to him, the athlete doesn't have time to focus on how much they're hurting, just riding along on the positive affirmations of the coach.
No problem, I've got time for this stuff. Your wife is lovely, you're really lucky. It was nice to chat with her, we connected over a few mutual friends at Georgetown. I would have bought her drinks but I didn't want her to get the wrong idea when I saw her left hand. And thank you for the support through the years. Also, please be sure to ask for The Iverson Collection at your local dispensary. I'll DM you a discount code for your family, rojo. You're alright, man.
I feel your point and agree to a large degree. Hyping videos of workouts is silly, it's just a snapshot of training therefore isn't enlightening. People find it entertaining because they use their imagination to extrapolate further. At least you did extrapolate appropriately by finding performance context. The subtext in this is that star runners in the sport compete too seldom and so fans (and fanboy media) are thirsty for this sort of thing as a result. At least OAC showed up for Cross Champs and are racing Millrose. That's more than we can say for BTC or many others. And yet for the fanbase that's still an unsatisfactory frequency of once every couple of months. Even if you spread out an NBA season over 12 months, fans get to enjoy a far greater frequency of competition. Distance runners could and should be able to race at least a couple times per month, on average. Even modern marathoners are racing like four times, at best, in a 4-month block. And then they're off for two months. So Gault is sort of right, this is at least something to look at when basically nobody else is competing. But you're more right, it's silly that it has to come to that when they could have all raced a mile at a meet in Boulder or Golden, instead. And they could go to competitions to run "train through" races far more regularly. But that's what happens when there's a scant pro sport structure to require a greater uniform number of competitions to better engage fans.
