i go to a small school where the record is 15:46
3 miles: 15:45 on a pretty tough course we run every year
“5k”: 15:44 on a course with 180 feet of elevation over 3 big hills that’s 3.04
5k: 15:55 in a gently rolling course

Why do people track these things? No course is the same as another. Track school records matter, not XC.

They’re still at least interesting, though you have to take them slightly less seriously than track records - IAAF used to say “world best” instead of “world record” for road course races, which is about as much nuance as you need to get through the day.
Besides, as a coach, the kids seem to take a big interest in XC records (including course records which are more “legit”) so I started keeping an all-time list. The kids like the challenge of cracking into the top (insert their goal number here) and seeing where they stack up against the runners of the past, and it also keeps some of the old stars’ names in people’s minds. If that pushes them to run a little faster, why knock it?
14:45 Woodward Park
15:15 Balboa Park
like 18:30
very small school with a basketball coach who wanted a couple hundred extra dollars per month
I’m assuming that I know the record holder. 15:32 on a pretty fast course but 15:42 on a tough course but someone ran sub 15 on it a couple of years ago. Derryfield in NH.
