I'm going to be racing a 5k this weekend. Goal is sub 15. My previous PR is barely sub 16, but I was on 15:40 pace through 2 miles (10:06) before I tried picking it up with about 1400 to go, maintained that for 400m, and then it was a death march to the finish. I'm also much fitter now.
When's the best time to "pick it up" in a race? I'm not the best kicker, but a year ago I ran a 3200, and the first 2000 felt like a jog (6:15) before I ran 69, 64, and 62 to close. However, I don't think I could close this fast in an actual race where I'm going hard from the gun. I was thinking of beginning to wind it up with about 4-5 laps to go, before settling into a fast rhythm at 600 and an even faster one at 400/200
