What should be important is that player or athlete is representing that team or country.

I agree about pro sports. I don't care about the "home country" of NFL players or soccer players.
But the literal point of the Olympics was to bring all the different peoples of the world together and unite all nations in a spectacle of sport. If we just run "the three fastest Kenyans that live in each country" as our national teams, then we never get to learn about the different kind of people that live around the world and the different systems that each nation has used to develop their athletes.
